There was a story a few months ago about Bush's painting hobby, and the paintings shown were of his pet dog and of his ranch. Like the Leno painting, they were not great art but were certainly passable, not embarrassing, better than most people - including Obama - could probably do. I saw a clip of one of the morning news shows - I forget which - talking about it, and - of course - they were using it to make jabs at Bush.

You mention Mad magazine, and I think that's a good analogy - Bush's painting is relatively good illustrative art, like you'd see in a magazine or commercial art.

I think that the highlights and shadows are better than good. I’d hang that picture on my wall with pride.

He is painting! That is important and looks as if he has lost the fear of the paint, which causes most people to give up painting.

I occasionally dip into Mad and it’s sad to see how badly the artwork has fallen. The 60s and 70s had the best artists. Mort Drucker & Don Martin. Wow!
