Senate Adopts New Rules on Filibusters

A bitterly divided Senate voted Thursday to ease the confirmation process for most presidential nominees, a momentous and potentially risky step that limits the ability of Republicans to block President Barack Obama's choices for executive-branch and most judicial posts.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D., Nev.) engineered the rules change, over Republican objections, with a complicated parliamentary maneuver that ended up placing new curbs on the use of the filibuster—a move so controversial that it is often called the "nuclear option."

"The American people believe Congress is broken. The American people believe the Senate is broken…It's time to change the Senate before this institution becomes obsolete," Mr. Reid said.

The key vote was 52-48, with all but three Democrats voting for the change and all Republicans opposed. Democratic Sens. Carl Levin of Michigan, Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Joe Manchin of West Virginia broke from their party and voted against changing the rules.

Then how come Republicans have a huge advantage in the number of Governors?

good luck, the house gop and Gop Senators should not pass a single Dem bill until it is reversed and drop any bipartisan thing pending, kill the lot stone dead.

Boehner is on record stating that any legislation passed using the nuclear option will not be taken up in the House. ...We'll see though.

“The lame duck Senate will change the rules back before they leave office and the new Senators are sworn in.”

And it will get changed right back in Jan 2015!

I would make it 51 for everything next time we have control and pack the Courts with fire-breathing rock-ribbed conservatives that would undo every liberal idea passed in the past 150 years!

Those commie bastards would be crapping their knickers in fear that I would reintroduce slavery!

Then if the Senate changes hands the Republicans can just change the rule back.

If the Republican Senators had any guts, they would en mass walk out and boycott all Senate business. One R senator could be let behind to prevent unanimous consent.

As the United States descends further and further into socialist anarchy, the Republican party displays both its impotence and stupidity. Waiting until November 214 or 2016 is too late. The United States as we loved it will be a distant memory by then!

I’d feel pretty good if people wanted to hire me for a job so much they blew up decades-old rules to do it.

Would you still feel good knowing they were hiring you to take care of something you knew they really wanted destroyed?

I marvel at the majority comments on this thread in reaction to the overt MarxoFascist coup taking place right in front of them.

Most have absolutely NO CLUE what time it is or what is actually happening.

Folks, it’s OVER. The quaint notions that somehow the GOP and Conservatives are going to ‘retake’ the Senate via elections is woefully ignorant of this ideology that has taken over.

There WILL NOT BE ANOTHER GOP/CONSERVATIVE MAJORITY in any national capacity within civil means PERIOD.

That means, elections are moot. Cook County went national.

The Normalcy Bias and deliberate willful ignorance of this enemy that has taken over the country is absolutely astounding to me.

It simply means, this people are given over to strong delusion - and this people are going to continue to lie to themselves while being subjugated, and want to hear the lies as the boot of subjugation is on all our necks.

Elections are DONE. OVER. What remains is an illusion of choice to placate you.

The rule of Law is DONE. We’ve seen this now for the last 5 years - the law can and will be changed arbitrarily to suit the needs of the MarxoFascist agenda.

If you people continue to hand onto a corrupted ideal that our electoral process and institutions are still a means to hold tyranny at bay - then I submit you are LOST to delusion.

Just remember this fact of history - once Marxists have achieved total power in key places - GENOCIDES happen of political enemies of the regime.

The point of the exercise is to make lifetime appointments to the fed courts hearing cases over federal regulations. Current lineup is 4-D, 4-R, and 3 vacancies.

The kenyan is planning on ruling by EO if the GOP takes the senate. He is creating the template for a totalitarian leftist to rule the USA. Straight up in your face fascism from the Democratic Party (DPUSA).

-- I'll give the Dems props... they had the guts to do it. The Republicans never did. --

Frist and McConnell were ready to pull the trigger, and 7 GOP senators, McCain, Collins, and 5 others, signalled they would vote AGAINST. Frist couldn't get 50 votes to support the change.

Anyway, you are correct. The GOP as a whole lacked the fortitude to carry it out. But I'm more pointed in my criticism, as most of the GOP (which was in the majority in the Senate at the time) was more than ready to go for it.

McCain, Collins, DeWine, Snowe, Warner, and Chafee.

This is another reason for Senate Republicans to state that they will not negotiate with Reid on any legislative issues until they take the Senate in 2014.

But, if the Republicans DO take the Senate, then I doubt they will decide to change this rule back...hahaha.

Your freedom took a giant step backward today, thanks to Obamugabe’s brownshirts.

Are you sure that you want to continue living in this banana republic? Conservatives have no representation - NONE. There are no consequences to the leftist. "The land of the free". BS

The next time there is a Republican president, the Republicans will put the old rules back. Fixed. Not sarcasm.

Agreed.

We'll all be better off once we realize the Republic is dead.
