If the Democrats lose their majority in the November 2014 elections, they'll change the rule back before the new Congress is seated.

Remember how they kept changing the rules for Senate vacancies in Massachusetts. When Kerry was running for President and Romney was governor, they changed the rule so that if Kerry won, Romney would not be able to pick a Republican as his replacement. Later, when Teddy died but the governor in office was a Democrat, they changed the rule so that the governor could pick a Democrat until a special election was held. (And then Reid allowed the replacement to keep voting in the Senate for weeks after the election even though constitutionally he was ineligible to do so once the election was held).
