US criticizes new China zone, vows to defend Japan

Geneva (AFP) - The United States said Saturday it was "deeply concerned" and committed to defending Japan after China announced an air zone in the East China Sea that includes disputed islands.

In a move that US ally Japan branded as "very dangerous," China said it was setting up the "air defense identification zone" over the islands administered by Tokyo to "guard against potential air threats."

Hagel reiterated that the Japanese-administered Senkaku islands -- which the Chinese claim and call the Diaoyu -- fell under the US-Japan security treaty, meaning that Washington would defend its ally Tokyo if the area is attacked.

"We are in close consultation with our allies and partners in the region, including Japan. We remain steadfast in our commitments to our allies and partners," Hagel said.

The defense chief made clear that the United States, which stations more than 70,000 troops in Japan and South Korea, would not respect China's declaration of control over the zone.

First official declaration I've seen anywhere that the Senkakus are covered under the US-Japan mutual defense treaty.

Just a thought...

Perhaps the USA should respond by ramping (down) the massive amount we buy from China.

Just saying.

We could bring back businesses, to America.

President Obama promises Japan:

“If you like your air zone...

...you can keep your air zone.”

Just thought we could use some early notice of the next place of retreat by Zero and his cadre. Thanks Zhang Fei.

“First official declaration I’ve seen anywhere that the Senkakus are covered under the US-Japan mutual defense treaty.”

This official declaration about the islands had already been made last year by the state department.

China is clearly viewing the Iran deal as a sign of weakness and decided that this was the opportune time to begin flexing their muscles in the region. This is not good.

Japan should feel safe they are as good a friend to Obama as, say, Israel.

I've been following the subject off and on, but I did not see that explicit declaration. I'll agree with you that the Chinese probably see the Iranian pact as a sign of American weakness.

David Cameron is the second coming of Neville Chamberlain. I understand why Obama caved, but Cameron is supposed to be a member of the Conservative Party that staged the Suez Canal takeover in the 50's and regained the Falklands in the 80's. At the risk of sounding of sounding prejudiced, I'm gonna say that having two Scotsmen in a row run Britain was bound to end in tears.

>>Perhaps the USA should respond by ramping (down) the massive amount we buy from China<<

This starts in every Americans home. Read the labels. I have had a personal China boycott for years. My appliances are American made, autos, tractor, horse tack...you name it. If I can't buy American, I'll buy goods from Mexico or Vietnam...whatever, but I won't be Chinese.

Americans bought into the globalist lie that Americans want cheaper goods...problem is, cheaper meant cheezy quality.

Besides, American corporations are allowed by China to pollute the crap out of their air and water to pad their bottom line. Little environmental/worker safety regs. like we have here in the states.

Buy American!

In the words of don rumsfeld, “weakness is provocative”. I wouldn’t be astounded if mexico claimed possession of half of texas next week.

what is this box-of-kittens-administration going to do about it?

Yea, but that’s too radical an idea for the “free trade uber alles!” crowd, who thinks that trading with commies is A-OK, just as lone as they get to buy cheaper and cheaper crap at Walmart.

“-—boycott for years”-—make that decades at my house. Remember when Walmart used to advertise “American made”? That was up to the early 80’s. About 1985 my wife and I thot we’d take a trip thru the local Walmart to see if they had anything we could use. The first thing I picked up was a pair of boots, looked at the bottoms, and noted “made in China.” We walked on thru and haven’t been back. I still have bumperstickers on my trucks that say “eat your import”. Quality and SERVICE are always the issues so there is very little chicom krap at my place.

Note that it was Hagel making the large statement of support. Curious because he hasn’t taken a firm position on anything so far including advocating clean underwear. Shooting his mouth off really makes it a sure thing fur shure?
