ELKHART - Many stores and restaurants will be open this year on Thanksgiving Day, and one local man says he lost his job because of it. Tony Rohr worked at Pizza Hut for more than ten years, but says he was fired recently because he refused to open on Thanksgiving. He says he doesn't think people should have to work on a holiday like Thanksgiving. He started at Pizza Hut as a cook and worked his way up to being a general manager of the Jackson Boulevard Pizza Hut in Elkhart.
He was told opening on Thanksgiving this year was mandatory, so at a meeting with his superiors he decided to take a stand.
"I said, 'Why can't we be the company that stands up and says we care about our employees and they can have the day off?'"
Tony says it wasn't about him. It was about his employees. He told his bosses that he would not open the restaurant he managed on Thanksgiving.

This why I don’t go out and spend on Thanksgiving or Christmas.
1. You have a job.
2. Your boss orders you to work on Christmas, your kid’s wedding day, the day of your mother’s funeral, the day after you have open heart surgery...(pick one)...and you disobey knowing you can get fired.
3. You get fired.
Where’s the part where you’ll expect people to feel sorry for you? Because you will.

After my military service was over, and I went to work, in thirty eight years of working, I only turned down overtime twice, due to fatigue.
For the rest I never missed a chance to earn overtime. I worked holidays, vacation for others, more holidays, double shifts, and was on call every day I was off.
I am retired and all that overtime paid off handsomely.
If I was working now, and had a chance to work Thanksgiving and earn overtime plus holiday pay I would work. I consider it “easy money”.

Neither do we. We will be home all weekend with our family instead of going shopping with all of the lemmings.
In this economic climate there will be a hundred or more lined up to apply for the opening he created. They will be very thankful.

Also in this economic and cultural climate I hope this man is recognized for standing up for his values and principles and he gets a job offer from a company that shares those values and principles.

When you work for a company, the basis of your hiring is that you are there(especially in the case of a manager) to follow company reasonable and lawful policies. While I may not agree with the policy of being open for business on Thanksgiving there are many, many businesses that remain open. If the manager wants to directly disobey a business policy, I see no reason why that company can not terminate him.
When Tony signs the checks, he can make the schedule.
As an independent contractor with a couple of employees, I'm always looking for someone who won't work when it's inconvenient for them.

Back in the day when I ran McDonald’s and we were closed on Thanksgiving I had a lot of unhappy employees because the lost a day of pay. When quick service restaurants and fast food started to stay open it was because there is a demand. Not everyone celebrates Thanksgiving and even those that do want something fast and easy without having additional cooking around the big meal. When you work in certain jobs you have to accept what comes with them, if you don’t like it you move on. Sounds like he gave his bosses a ultimatum, when I had people give me the or else I showed them door too.
I agree with the guy, but he knew he’d get fired. I expect he’ll find a better place to work.
You actually think pizza hut employees have a contract?
