I resisted reading these books until I realized that my 13 year old granddaughter was reading them. I read all three in three days. I’m still digesting them and not sure how I feel about them. I can’t give a full assessment because it would involve spoilers. There are two or three plot twists that trouble me. I’m not sure its all about tyranny and fighting centralized government. It’s more subtle than that.
Why not post them here?
I heard that the “Hunger Games” was created as an anti-Bush analogy, but I’m not exactly sure how. Supposedly someone thought that if the “Bush Doctrine” continued, we would be staging war games for entertainment.
:: the evil President Snow ::
All sorts of agenda and ideological bells and whistles went of on this one.
Tell me, is this “evil president” (note that Cletus did not capitalize the ‘p’ but the author did!) considerably ...ahem ...
“white as SNOW”?
She did start writing the books when Bush was still President.
I thought it felt conservative in message. All the good guys were hard working anti government people living in the rural areas. The bad guys were shallow government supporting metro- sexuals living in the capital.
An article that may have info for you, re: Hunger Games as Bush analogue: http://cnsnews.com/blog/lauren-thompson/propaganda-packed-hunger-games-dvd-written-frustration-bush-era
The first book’s movie is currently on Netflicks if anyone wants to see the first movie before going to see the 2nd one.

Regardless of your feelings about the book, kudos to you for checking up on what your granddaughter is into. I like that kind of grand parenting!
Bkmk
I’ve read that too.
Truthfully, the closest analog would be with Tianamen Square and China.
But it is far easier for anyone to make a connection to the Obama administration - with lots of government jobs and low unemployment in Washington DC, with Obamacare subsidies to Congress and staff, with Congress allowed to engage in insider trading legally.
The connection to Bush was largely imaginary.
Cletus, I did not pick up any particular symbolism in the name of President Snow other than he was evil. I read the books before I saw the movies and I really did not pick up on any racial aspects of the games at all. I believe some of the characters were given greater racial diversity for the movie that was not apparent or specified in the book. This would be an obvious move to give the move a greater audience appeal. For example; Rue and Cinna were “white” in my mind’s eye when I read the book but were clearly black in the movie. - It is possible that I missed the racial identity cues in the text when I read it. — But the race of the characters makes no difference. They were good, honorable people who shared values with and helped the heroine. I did not see any racial overtones (in either direction) in the book or in the movie.
Sometimes I miss the subtleties in the mist when I am getting sprayed in the face by a fire hose....
Humble, I have never been able to get pictures and url links to paste into my posts. For some reason, I am only able to post in simple text formats. It is probably a head space and timing error on my part....
The thought of a movie about children killing other children just doesn’t appeal to me.
What is the acceptable minimum age for a child to read the books and see the movies?
I think the author intended that, but I see it as a good reflection of the Obama administration. eggs on her face as an unwitting prophet.
