Blueray is a different format than DVD. Much better picture quality.

“Likewise. Samsung LED, no 3D. We love it.”

We have a Sony, a Panasonic and a new Samsung LED/LCD Smart TV. The Samsung is clearly the best, and it’s also the least expensive. Features and quality go up and prices go down: Moore’s Law! Technology is moving so fast that if you want the very best, don’t buy anything because it’s obsolete before the bill arrives.

I absolutely love my Samsung 46” smart TV with 120 hz scan. Netflix works very well, though the browser is a bit clunky as the remote control is not suited for typed input

I have two Sharps (60” and 47”). Both Aquos, and I love them both. Sharp provides good value along with reliability.

I went with Vizio when my standard TV died in 2008. Never had a problem with the Vizio — very good picture quality.

As for larger sizes online, many special ship them and that includes initial set up in your home. Check the website for specific delivery information, etc.

____________

That is the part that paralyzes me. If you read the old thread I posted in the body of my thread, you will see that I even did this with stereos.

Dude, that’s a feeling I know. (Waiting for the next generation of Chromebooks, as we speak. And waiting.)

Blu Ray players will play DVDs, I understand. And if I were to buy one, I’d look for a model that plays discs from all Regions.

If in doubt why not go with a 46” - 50” LED, a Roku 3 with headphones jack on the remote, a years subscription to Netflix and keep $1200 - $1400 still in the bank?

Samsung makes the best LCD/LED screen components on the planet. They invested MANY $ billions in manufacturing the large LCD glass panels, which in turn gets OEM'ed to most of the other flat panel vendors. Their products have excellent longevity.

LG products seem to produce a LOT of heat. Good natural colors, but heat is the enemy of longevity.

SONY has OK TVs, but their sound systems don't perform well and have significant "clipping" issues if played loud (breaks up - like pixilation with video broadcasts). They're also priced at a premium.

Mitsubishi also produces excellent video products. They may be best known for DLP and projection video products. In fact, I have a "free" 60" Mitsubishi pro rear projection TV that I paid > $5K in 1997 for someone who will take it from my storage in Austin (Freepmail me). I'm going to donate to a battered women's shelter or kid's place ASAP so I can free up space. Fantastic product - I just can't afford the space.

Here’s a link that explains DVD and Blu Ray Regions.

http://help.abcshop.com.au/questions.php?questionid=11

The reason I’d want an all-region BR player like my DVD player, is that during my foreign trips I occasionally pick up some DVDs, or someone sends me one, so that compatibility never becomes a problem.

Smart means it can do a bunch of stuff, besides being a TV, you can connect to the internet, connect to your camera and darn near anything,, all at the press of a few buttons.

I have wimped point doing it with our 46 inch Samsung, 3 years and working great.. The bummer these days is seeing what the same TV now costs. At least half... Oh cell.

We need a new one in the family room.. Maybe a 60 incher.. Ehhh,, 55 will do..

And Happy Thanksgiving, my friend!

Most blue rays will play DVDs as well.

Because I want a BIG TV. When I walked into BJs and saw that tv, I paralyzed. I was so taken by the color and the size. It just floored me. I cannot describe it. I am not a particularly materialistic person, and tend to buy durable and good value over flashy. As a matter of fact I regret, at times my Yankee upbringing, for it is about good wools, silks and cottons. all understated.

In retrospect, I wish I could have worn clothing with sparkles.

This TV is out of character for me. But I do want it. I want to enjoy big tv in my library.
