Fmr U.S. Sen. Bob Smith changes mind, will challenge Shaheen [Conservative Again?]
WMUR ^ | Dec 01, 2013 | James Pindell

Posted on 12/01/2013 2:32:49 PM PST by BushCountry

Former New Hampshire Republican senator Bob Smith said he has changed his mind and will try to defeat Democratic incumbent Jeanne Shaheen for his old seat next year.

Smith told WMUR Political Scoop on Sunday that he had made a decision not to run largely to get out of the way for other candidates, but as weeks came and went no major candidates got into the race, and he kept getting encouragement to run.

"I have a decision to run again for the Senate," said Smith. "This is nothing personally against Jeanne Shaheen, who I like as a person, but I couldn't disagree more with her politics."

Wishy washy candidates win reelection to the House and Senate all the time.

I’m not so sure he’s wishy washy, however, as much as he’s a wackadoodle.

1999, after his early POTUS candidacy goes no where Smith leaves the GOP for the Taxpayers party to compete for their nomination (hoping to throw the election to Gore?). Fruitcake.

A few months later John Chafee dies leaving Smith (if he were still a Republican that is) in line for the Chairmanship of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works. Smith “realizes” he made a mistake and comes crawling back to the GOP. He gets the Chairmanship. Flip flop.

In that role Smith lets his true envirowacko colors fly. Fruitcake. He loses the GOP primary in 2002 to John Sununu because of that and because he is seen as weak for the general election.

2004, Smith starts a Senate bid in Florida that goes no where. Fruitcake, and desperate for office.

Later in 2004 he attacks the NH GOP over the “phone jamming scandal” and suggests maybe Shaneen was robbed of victory over Sununu by it. Fruitcake.

Oh yeah he also ENDORSED JOHN KERRY for President, citing envirowacko concerns amongst other things. He went on to praise Kerry’s bipartsianship and war record. The real reason was because Bush supported Sununu against him. Extreme fruitcake and petty traitor.

2010, he again considers running in Florida. Pathetic.

So he’s conservative, on everything but the environment where he’s a nutcase. He’s also a spiteful petty traitor who feels entitled to office.

He most assuredly has ZERO chance of getting elected. He last won in 1996, before he started acting like a fruitcake.

NO WAY IN HELL?

His words:

As someone who worked with you daily for 12 years as a United States Senator, I am acutely conscious of the fact that we disagree on many important issues. Despite our differences, you have always been willing to engage in constructive debate in an effort to forge sound public policy.

I deeply respect your commitment to our nation and your patriotism which, I believe, was forged when you-like I-proudly wore the uniform of the United States Navy in Viet Nam...

Because of the courage and character you demonstrated in Vietnam, I believe you when you say that you’ll do a better job than President Bush to win the peace in Iraq, as well as to win the war against terrorism.

President Bush has failed to restrain federal spending, sending our deficit spinning into the stratosphere. I well remember that you were one of a handful of Democrats who crossed the aisle to forge a bipartisan coalition in the Senate to balance the federal budget [...]

John, for each of these reasons I believe President Bush has failed our country and my party. Accordingly, I want you to know that when I go into the booth next Tuesday I am going to cast my vote for you. So will my wife, Mary Jo, and all three of my children: Jason, Bobby and Jenny.

Moreover, I will do all that I can to encourage my friends in New Hampshire and Florida to join me in supporting you.

The signs are mounting. Scott Brown travels almost weekly to New Hampshire. Last month he formed a political action committee there to raise funds; this week he attacked the state’s Democratic senator on his favorite target: national health care.

Now national Republicans are pushing the former Massachusetts senator to declare his candidacy for the US Senate from New Hampshire. And they insist, despite mixed signals from Brown, that he is seriously weighing such a run.

The chairman and vice chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, Senators Jerry Moran of Kansas and Rob Portman of Ohio, said they have urged Brown to take on Democratic Senator Jeanne Shaheen, who is otherwise expected to cruise to reelection next year.

Google it, it was common knowledge, obviously you didn’t follow him THAT closely.

There’s a copy of his endorsement letter.

I must admit the message of support for Kerry was based on conservative principles, balance budget, runaway spending and stopping the war Iraq.

Yep Smith has been all over the political spectrum. He was in DC as a House member
and in the Senate. He moved to FL after leaving the Senate. Tried a presidential GOP
primary bid and dropped out. He also played with the Independent Party before
coming back to the GOP at some point. He now says he’ll move back to NH and run. I
suspect he maybe lost to the other contenders that may run. JMO

Weak criticism. People consider running and then don't run, all the time.

Later in 2004 he attacks the NH GOP over the “phone jamming scandal” and suggests maybe Shaneen was robbed of victory over Sununu by it. Fruitcake.

Four of Sunnunu's guys were convicted of commiting federal crimes for "phone jamming". Not sure what Smith said on the subject and you haven't produced a quote on it. Clearly Smith like many here hates the Sunnunu/GOP-e wing of the Republican party.

Oh yeah he also ENDORSED JOHN KERRY for President...

Checking...

There is NO WAY IN HELL that he campaigned for Kerry......that HAS to be a LIE.

Smith was a strong conservative who was even critical of the Republican party for being too moderate.

Obviously he had a lot of enemies, both Democrats and GOP-e.

Many of us who criticized him for leaving the Republican party back then, today consider doing the same thing.

So the question is did Smith "campaign" for Kerry?

So far the only evidence I can find is a supposed memo from Smith to Kerry claiming support. But this memo can only be found at KOS.

Hmmmm.

“Weak criticism. “

Strong criticism. Running in a far away state 2 years after you lose. Ridiculous. Trying again 6 years later after getting no support the first time, even more ridiculous.

The phone jamming stuff. Hate the GOP-E all you want but he uses the term “ 2002 election fraud”, implying he thinks Shaheen would have won. He probably wanted her to, the spiteful cretin.

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM.

His endorsement of Kerry was all over FR at the time, I don’t know how you missed it. I’m sure Smith would like to pretend it didn’t happen. Sorry, no dice.

Let's see. October 28, 2004.

Somebody posts on FreeRepublic that Bob Smith endorses Kerry, cites a John Kerry website and then gets zotted.

Link

Did you miss that??

Smith was a conservative while the Bush lead GOP-e wasn't. Smith didn't like where the party was going. He left, came back and then was primaried out by Sunnunu Jr. and the Rove GOP-e.

Sounds like an early skimish between conservatives and the GOP-e.

Ridiculous is the GOP-e.

Pretend it didn’t happen all you want. I REMEMBER IT HAPPENING. It was not made up by the left to discredit Smith or whatever the hell you are implying in a vain attempt to defend this nut.

It happened, deal with it. If you still support him for anything then you’re a fool.
