Ammo Price Surge Expected as EPA Regulations Close Lead Smelter

Because of heightened EPA regulations, Doe Run Company's Herculaneum lead smelter in Herculaneum, Missouri—the last U.S. smelter of its kind—is closing its doors on December 31, 2013.

Once this happens, the lead for traditional ammunition will have to be imported, thus driving up the price for bullets, shotgun shells, etc.

The Herculaneum smelter has been operating in the same location since 1892. And according to the NRA's Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA), "it is the only smelter in the United States which can produce lead bullion from raw lead ore," so once it closes, the only lead smelters left in the nation will be ones that recycle lead from existing items "such as lead acid batteries or spent ammunition components."

Herculaneum's product is the type of lead used to make components for traditional lead ammunition, and once the smelter closes, such lead and/or ammunition components will have to be imported into the U.S. Ammunition prices are expected to rise, reflecting import costs.

The EPA is absolutely, totally, completely out-of-control.

Elections have consequences, and the outcome of the next ones will determine how quickly these anti-business, anti-2nd Amendment, anti-American regulations can be put right again.

"The Herculaneum smelter has been operating in the same location since 1892."

This thing has been operating that long with no apparent harm done, and they are JUST NOW targeting it for shutdown. This is the fault of the Congress. The budget for the EPA could be 'zeroed', yet nothing is done.

Unfortunately, once this industry is forced to close it’s probably a done deal, even if Republicans are running things. But that’ll probably never happen again, either.

Back door gun control.

Was at a gun show this weekend and a guy showed me this.

Don’t Republicans control the House of Representatives? What are they doing about this? Are there no Republicans in Missouri that can lead an effort to derail this? Does Congress have any control over the rogue EPA, or IRS for that matter?

Tell me again why having a Republican Congress is supposed to make any difference whatsoever.

Doe Run, based in St. Louis, has six mines, and two smelters, all in Missouri. Its refined lead production will drop to about 145,000 tons next year from 260,000 tons this year, he said. Doe Run is exploring ways to boost production outside of Missouri and has a demonstration plant in Missouri that may be able to produce primary lead, silver, zinc and copper, he said.

This is BS, lots of manufacturers are telling the buying public that this WILL NOT alter availability or price. The sort of lead produced by this plant is not the sort used for manufacture, and there is plenty of what they need.

I don't know, with the prevailing winds from the Southwest, there are an awful lot of stupid people in St.Louis.

Though ammunition is grave concern and this will drive up prices, there are other every day items that will also be affected such as car batteries and other equipment that still uses lead acid tech.

Sorry, but that's in the Easter bunny's job description. He'll be along soon, I'm sure.

Elections have consequences

That is so true, in so many ways. Many conservatives, myself included, just couldn't get behind Romney. We refused to pick the lesser of two evils, so we ended up with pure evil.

Actually, the smelter has created quit a bit of harm to the community and its residents from emissions. Many decades of ignoring obvious upgrades that could have been made passed while Doe Run Company was quite profitable have led to the current shutdown.
I’ve read that recycling lead from automotive batteries is an obvious supply for ammo requirements. I don’t know who might be trying to do this, however.

If people haven't been reloading & building up their supplies for their grand kids, they are blind as bats. That being said, I don't believe this smelter will have that much of an impact; too many other raw product sources.

Most my friends that shoot targets, cast their own and have no problems. I have been leaning towards copper bullets more and more for hunting anyway. Partitions are great for some applications, but those TTSX's are tough to beat too.

I feel more threatened by taxation, govt buying up all production, and the over all demands of sportsman that are stocking up; that's the real reason store shelves are low.
