A kayak fisherman died Monday off Maui after a shark bit his dangling foot, officials said.

Maui County Ocean Safety officials received a report that a shark attacked a man fishing in a kayak between Maui and Molokini, a small island less than 3 miles off the southwest coast of Maui that's popular for diving and snorkeling.

""We are not sure why these bites are occurring more frequently than normal"

I'm sure some 'scientist' will soon find some link to global warming.

**We are not sure why these bites are occurring more frequently than normal**

Two theories come to mind:

1. Global warming
2. Bush

But only after another 30 years of taking grants and donations.

That man had those nice shiny artificial lures in the water and yet he was “dangling foot!”

Someone has to say it: He should have had a bigger boat.

Wow. We were swimming around Maui spring of 2012. No sign of or mention of sharks then. Now they’re shutting down beaches. We took a boat trip out to a diving site and spent the better part of the day. It was wonderful. We did decide however that given the length of the air plane ride, these old folks didn’t need to go again.

You forgot to add the sharks remember the 200 million slaves that were thrown overboard and are looking for an easy meal.

So white racism is another possibility.

“That’s why we are conducting a two-year study of shark behavior around Maui that may give us better insights.”

...then what? Another 2 year study of human behavior around Maui sharks? A 2 year study of humans acting like sharks? End result? When sharks are around, stay out of the water.

Pretty easy...Hungry, curious shark in the same water as humans at very close proximity...

Bit his foot, that is what happens when you dangle bait. They call it fishing.

I have seen sharks many times while diving in that area. Once while heading back to the boat, a small (4ft) grey grabbed my dive buddy’s fin right off of his foot.

Molokini Crater is a huge diving/snorkel destination right off Makena, Maui. There are always tiger sharks out in that channel between shore.

We were there a few years back and a whale washed up on the beach in Kihei. The tiger sharks were coming right up to the shore and ripping it to pieces. It was awesome to watch for one day. The next day they towed it out into ocean and dumped it.
