Fallin declares state of emergency; Snow, sleet to continue through Friday in Tulsa area
The Tulsa World ^ | December 5, 2013 | Staff Reports

Oklahoma Gov. Mary Fallin today declared a State of Emergency for all 77 Oklahoma counties due to the winter storm impacting the state.

"The weather is bad and getting worse," said Fallin in a news release. "Emergency personnel are coordinating with state and local officials to ensure we are prepared and ready for whatever comes our way."

The declaration allows state agencies to make emergency purchases related to disaster relief and preparedness. It is also a first step toward seeking federal assistance should it be necessary.

Under the Executive Order, the state of emergency lasts for 30 days. Tulsa forecast calls for snow, sleet, single-digit lows.

Tulsa's winter weather is mostly expected tonight, with high chances of sleet and snow during the day today, then flurries and freezing drizzle possible Friday.

These folks need to come to Minnesota and learn what winter is. We got 28 inches of snow in the last 48 hours, it's going to -15 tonight with a -35 wind chill, and we didn't even close the office.

That works well now, but I wouldn’t want to be there during the summer! Come to think of it - I don’t like being in Oklahoma during the summer, either. I’m basically an Oregon boy and like the climate west of the Cascades a whole lot better.

“In southern California it’s about 62 degrees, bright sunny, occasional cotton-ball clouds, mild sleepy breeze and visibility is nearly limitless...The view of the mountains is just fantastic...’

Wow. This must be one of those days your’e not having an earthquake, wildfire, flooding, monsoon, beach erosion, or tsunami. Enjoy!

I’ve noticed that the officials do that “ahead of time” just based on the projections. I’ve noticed this before and have seen it many times, since I’ve been in Oklahoma.

Quick, someone wake up the Weather Cannel. That station that once talked about weather and is now a nature channel.

Tell the Weather Channel they can name this storm.

I grew up in that part of the country that gets ice storms. They are really nasty. I much prefer the ice box and snow we have here today.

I just got an email from my Daughter who teaches in Tulsa. Her husband phoned at 1:30 and told her to go home. She said she almost slid off the road twice.

Fortunately she made it home OK. along with their children.

I just noticed this in another article ...

“Pruitt said Oklahoma’s price-gouging law prohibits an increase of more than 10 percent in the price of most goods and services when a state of emergency has been declared.”

Interesting ... as I didn’t know this.

For sure ... it is slick out there, as I just came back from picking someone up at school. It would have been better driving if four inches of snow had been dumped on us — instead of the sequence of rain, freezing rain, sleet, snow pellets and then snow ...

The roads r becoming very slick. It is mainly ice falling where I am at. Stay off the roads if you can. My dad just got in from North Dakota, said it was nice to be back where it’s warm.....LOL!!! (He meant temps. above 0). In all seriousness, for Oklahoma, it is freezing!!

I could never live in a blue state. We get ice storms here that cause power outages that can last for weeks. We also have floods, wildfires, tornadoes and earthquakes. But we also have a high percentage of patriots and that is why I choose to live in Oklahoma.

this is the coldest year I remember here

I thought we should have had some global warming by now after 30 years of global warming the scientists and news media have warned us about

you just help tyranny by ridiculing my arguments calling them out on this

In southern California it’s about 62 degrees, bright sunny...

Send some my way. Yesterday afternoon we hit 85, right now it's 35 with rain and getting colder. Tonight most of the roads will be glare ice.

I’ve always maintained that Oklahoma is one of the few states that believes in the environmentally sound method of snow/ice removal. We just wait until the sun melts it!
