Gun registry’s fate in limbo 24 years after massacre

Born in the wake of this country’s worst school shooting, the long-gun registry has particular significance for Quebecers.

The anniversaries of Montreal’s École Polytechnique massacre — when a lone gunman killed 14 women on Dec. 6, 1989 — have often been marked by announcements both federal and provincial to toughen gun laws. The long-gun registry was announced around the five-year anniversary of the tragedy by Allan Rock, the federal justice minister at the time.

Now, 19 years after the registry was created and 24 years after Marc Lépine opened fire on female students with a legally obtained Ruger Mini-14, the registry has been eliminated in all provinces except Quebec.

“I think we’re more rational in Quebec about gun control,” Francoeur said. “We have had the experience with Polytechnique, and Concordia and Dawson. Our position is simple: when you go hunting, you have to register the car that you drive, so why not your gun?”

“Those arguments about the right to self-protection never got any traction in Quebec,” she said.

This is the foolishness of gun control. Do we really think that people planning to commit murder are going to register their guns with the government? Hunters will register their guns because they are using guns for an legally acceptable reason unlike criminals.

And you notice how the gun control woman quoted sees no problem with the victims of these mass shootings not being able to protect themselves. She also does not mention how a gun registry would prevent someone from shooting other people or committing any crime.

Do they still have traffic accidents and drunk driving? If so, registering the cars is clearly not a factor. It isn't for firearms either.

I spent a lot of time in Quebec as a young man and I love the place. I love the people. But, damn, their politics are screwy.

Is it their Catholic heritage that gave them a love of authority? I mean, they've all left the church now, but did they replace it with love of government?

Or is it just something in French blood?

That is not an argument.

You could as easily say: Our position is simple: when you own a typewriter, you do not have to register it. Why would you register a gun?
