The GOP establishment is loath to admit it, but the government shutdown is turning out to be a brilliant political chess move on the part of Senators Ted Cruz and Mike Lee. The Obamacare disaster, fully predictable by anyone who understands the effect of incentives and the fundamental incompetence of academic theorists and left wing ideologues, has made the go-for-broke attempt to stop it an obvious profile in courage.
Just take a look at this chart from the Huffington Post, via Charlie Cook:
Cook, a seasoned observer, sees the polling data moving against Democrats, and wonders, "Can Democrats Recover From the Obamacare Catastrophe?" But he fails to connect the dots, and dishes some typical establishmentarian snark at Cruz and Lee.
...in August, statements started coming from some of the more exotic Republicans in the House and Senate that perhaps it was a good idea to shut down the government over the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. Notwithstanding warnings from House and Senate Republican leaders and experienced (and wiser) members that such an effort would be a disaster for the party, the Republicans in the "kamikaze caucus" barreled ahead, over the cliff, shutting down the government.
They were stupid, in Cook's eyes, because the polls turned against the GOP, as the media launched its predictable campaign blaming it for the ginned-up inconveniences (remember fencing off the WW II memorial?). What Cook doesn't (or refuses) to see is that the turning of polls against the Democrats post-healthcare.gov is not a random, chance occurrence, but rather predictable to anyone who looks two or three moves ahead on the chessboard.
The budget and debt limit fights lie ahead. Cruz and Lee have laid out the path for us. The GOP can now say that that because the

Agreed. Reid was and is a Foil (fool?) for Obama who refused to negotiate because of the failed or failing and hopefully collapsing AxxCA . Reid therefore sat on the bills to deflect direct blame from O who ABSOLUTELY KNEW his WWW site sucketh. It is the MSM that confused the issue.
Yep, and he (Obama) and the dems caused the shutdown strictly because they wanted to force the American people into Obamacare.
The dems were sent Bill after Bill that would have funded the government. The ONLY thing the repubs asked for was that Obamacare either not be funded, or at the very least- delayed, in order to protect the American people from its devastating effects.
I hope Cruz and Lee will keep hammering these points.
It's the dems who are still insisting on OCare. But, they of course exempted themeselves-Harry Reid just exempted his staff.
Democrats end American life as we know it, the Republic dies, and a whopping 40% of the electorate thinks they just might possibly consider thinking about considering maybe voting for a (gasp) Republican in the next mid-term.
Just frickin' "WOW!" I am jumping on my Obamaphone and calling all my midnight hoops pals about this! Put $100 more on my EBT, take care of my foreclosure, pay off my student loan, and sign me up for another 99 weeks of unemployment benefits, with free health care.
What are you trying to spin? Ted Cruz was the driving force for the shutdown. When Obama said he wouldn’t defund Obamcare did you think he was kidding? Ted Cruz led a absurd Pickets charge anyway. Obama and Jarrett couldn’tof been happier....nice combo and pow! The Republicanswere flattened. When Mike Lee woke up and saw his poll numbers cratered with Utah Republicans....and he could very well lose in a primary he’s been running from the whole mess like a scalded dog. No one thinks this was a good idea...cept a couple of dozen folks on this forum.
Barack Obama and Harry Reid shut down the government
