After you heard President Obamas call for a hike in the minimum wage, you probably wondered the same thing I did: Was Obama sent from the future by Skynet to prepare humanity for its ultimate dominion by robots?
But just in case the question didnt occur to you, let me explain. On Tuesday, the day before Obama called for an increase in the minimum wage, the restaurant chain Applebees announced that it will install iPad-like tablets at every table. Chilis already made this move earlier this year.
With these consoles customers will be able to order their meals and pay their checks without dealing with a waiter or waitress. Both companies insist that they wont be changing their staffing levels, but if youve read any science fiction, you know thats what the masterminds of every robot takeover say: Were here to help. Were not a threat.
But the fact is, the tablets are a threat....

Exactly.
The incredible rise in productivity is the reason manufacturing is returning to the US.
Some define singularity as when the machines take over the world.
I do a lot of genealogy research using old censuses. It is fascinating to watch the waves of popular jobs come and go through the decades.
For example, in the nineteenth century a lot of self-supporting women were seamstresses - before factory dress wear. At the beginning of the 20th, many of their daughters became stenographers, or telephone operators, or worked in factories.
The sons of many men who had been listed as laborers, became telephone linesmen and auto mechanics.
And of course the number of clerks continued to expand for both sexes.
Yep. You have to have ambition and mechanical aptitude for it, so the new growth industry won't help the LIVs at all.
35 cent a gallon gas, a case o'beer, full gas tank, 6 guys in someones rat trap car, all for about 10 bucks.
Discovered a little tipsy by officer o'friendly on a Friday night, "Where'ye goin' Jackie-boy?" (EVERYone was jackie-boy to an Irish cop in Boston)
Get in, I'll drive ye home .... and he did.
The best I can do is direct kids to Norman Rockwell
"Utopia"
"slurp...slurp...slurp."
"Would you like some more?"
Machines control voting outcome too.
While I agree with the automation ideas, it will take thousands of engineers and builders to produce the stuff. The MAJOR drawback to the whole idea is, the U.S. has lost all those skills and assets and IMO, the equipment will come from.....you guessed it, China.
I can vividly remember gas selling for 19.9 cents per gallon in 1962. Of course, that was during a "gas war." Normally, it was 25 cents per gallon.
“Automation” means that you’ll blow into a device before you ca order another drink ... :-) ...
Ummm ... I’ve actually been looking for a device like this for my iPad ... :-) ...
Because of technology will we ultimately face a future with less "jobs" than we need? Systemic unemployment.
We all are not engineers and programmers. A good chunk of the world does not have the intellect to, even, be trained to perform higher skilled jobs even if the numbers were there.
Will there be enough wealth created to pay people to do, essentially, nothing?
How is that fair to the guy who CAN and does sit and code 12 hours a day?
Or will there be unseen service orientated jobs to support these new technologies?
I do seriously wonder about this. Ofcourse, it could all be for naught and the NWO may very well herd us ll into districts like the Hunger Games and it won't even be an issue. (:
Is this a real machine that exists today? If so, can you send me a link? Thank you
Seriously I can see it coming to that
But using such a devise as a customer in my mind would be foolish.
Remembering that a computer never forgets anything with out extensive deliberate action by the system administrator; once you blow in that tube you have created a record of what that instrument determined that your blood alcohol level was at that time.
That record could be subpoenaed in a trial for DUI or any other cause that may come before a court action against you.
Such an automated waiter system would also require you to swipe credit card before ordering (I assume it will work very much like an automated self serve gas station) so your when you blow in the tube a blood alcohol record would be linked to your credit card. These amounts to self incrimination before the fact for public drunkenness at the very least should charges be brought against you.
I would avoid drinking at an establishment that installs such a system. I will drink at a local dive before I would use such a devise.
I should mention a minor point here - using a credit card doesn’t actually identify the person doing the swiping.
I go out and do a lot of chores for a relative (at stores) where I swipe their card at the checkout, all the time.
Absolutely true.
You could also swipe your card and have someone else blow in the tube.
But the point I make is that should you be involved in some unpleasant interaction with the law you can decline to blow in the tube as a matter of your fifth amendment rights.
But should you have been drinking at an establishment that used the devise in question that record could be subpoenaed and put in to evidence against you.
You could contest that evidence but I doubt that you would win.
I would think that it would “bounce” alot when typing and selecting apps???
That’s why I said I was looking (present tense) - because I’ve seen that before and that’s exactly what would happen.
I may eventually come to that, if there are no alternatives - because mainly I was wanting to use it for movies, documentaries and other video presentations - where one doesn’t touch it for long periods of time. As it is right now, I lay down, put my knees up and prop the iPad at my waist.
I manage, as it is, without that, so I’m in no big hurry.
Also, a text message can be sent to my table when the meal is ready. That way, I can get up and get the food from the kitchen myself while it is still hot. Just tell me where to put my dirty dishes after I'm done and that will be the perfect restaurant experience.
