Soweto (South Africa) — A rain-sodden crowd at the Nelson Mandela memorial repeatedly booed one of his successors as president, Jacob Zuma, Tuesday, in a sign of growing discontent at this generation of South African leaders.

As images of Zuma flashed up on the big screens inside the Soweto stadium, there were sustained and repeated jeers from the tens of thousands of onlookers present.

Amid the tuneful celebrations to Mandela's life, the heckles were jarring.

Mandela's immediate successor Thabo Mbeki received applause in what often appeared to turn into a political beauty contest.

“After 20 years of democracy, South Africans are growing increasingly angry that income inequality is as bad, if not worse than it was during apartheid.

One in three workers does not have a job or has stopped looking.

Violent crime and corruption are pervasive.

When “O” ‘retires’... he can go there and take charge...I’m sure he will do a lot of good for them, TOO!

Wow, so they cheered the Clown, eh?

Pretty disgusting. Shows how weak the educational system is in South Africa.

Four years ago my wife and I were having breakfast at a b&b in southwest Ireland. At a table next to us was a white family from S. Africa. They asked me about Obama being elected, and I asked them about Zuma. This was shortly after Dear Leader was inaugurated, and I was very tactful. I said I hope things turn out well. I further said, however, my politics were conservative hoping they understood what I meant. In turn, they said they hoped the best for Zuma who had been recently installed. I wonder what they really felt about Zuma, and what they feel now.
