There is no doubt that the Democrats have been galloping to the left extreme of the political spectrum. At the same time the Republicans have been moving further to the conservative end of th political spectrum. You claim that Kennedy would be a conservative Republican today? Most of the GOP of that period would be considered liberal Democrats by today's standards. It has worked both ways.
Here's another example, Joe Lieberman, an almost perfect progressive in every way, was excommunicated form the Democratic party over one discretion. He sided with Bush on the WOT.
And I've seen several threads recently where most of the posters were ready to draw and quarter Ted Cruz and drum him out of the party for one single reason, he said something nice about Mandela. When it comes to excommunicating people for single transgressions Conservatives are not a whole lot different than the Democrats are.

"...first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye." - Matthew 7:5
Your crazy lady.
The Democraps don't have that problem, once elected they become even more progressive than as presented as a candidate. This progressivism increases over time also. They become better populists and progressives with age.
Do you see the difference?
