They gathered at the homestead of George Washington, 15 miles from the capital city named for him. The purpose? To discuss how, safely, to revive an overlooked, but invaluable, provision in the United States Constitution to allow a supermajority of states to rein in a power-drunk federal government.

According to a press release issued after the Assembly’s adjournment, “They emphasized the importance of any convention being done in a way that accomplishes the will of the people while protecting the sanctity of the Constitution, as this action could ultimately lead to proposed amendments to the U.S. Constitution, as authorized under Article V. The subject matter of what those amendments would be was not discussed.”

Thank you. So much of the controlling body in the republican party is against our efforts and we have to take a stand. Using a populist approach in a state by state effort makes good sense, in my opinion.

The detractors of this effort, the John Boehners, Karl Roves and Michael Medveds in our country would have been begging George Washington to forget the fool hearty plan of crossing the freezing Delaware River in the dark of night because something could go wrong.

Washington is run by lobbyist$ not legislators. The biggest overreach was the War on Terrorism which used workarounds to avoid a Congressional formal declaration of war. Used by Bush and Obama.

No, it's run by the unions. Unless you're talking about lobbyists representing the unions, or the unionized departments of the executive branch.

I have no problem with special interest groups unless, of course, they're government special interest groups.

Super majority? What does this mean? 2/3 of the states?

I'm not thinking two thirds of the states can be mustered up at this point. I like the idea and I will go research it, but just on face value....not sure how this would even take off.

I spoke with Washington 35th District Rep Drew MacEwen's office. They will put some assembly follow up information on the website soon. Staff said there is already another assembly being planned for May that will likely be held in Indiana.

Sounds pretty steep until you start to add up the states: Dems would need to quash amendments in 13 states in order to kill them The hardest (most liberal) states would be Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Vermont, New York, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware, California, Washington, Oregon and Hawaii. Write those off and it could still pass. It would come down to states like Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and Minnesota, which would all be somewhat diffcult "must-pass" states, ---but certainly not impossible.
