This is a sad story. I wonder if the approach of the Christmas season was a factor in this man's despair.

Hunter is the son of Joel Hunter, another megachurch pastor in Florida and spiritual advisor to the president.

Is Joel's church non-denominational like his son's?

Are these Unitarian sects or "non-denomination Christian"?

So his father is a “spiritual advisor to the president”. Does he take after his father? Because I know what type of people our Dear Leader chooses as spiritual advisors. That might explain something.

In Church, I completely love Advent and Christmas. Out side of Church I hate them both — they are pain, sorrow, sleeplessness, tortured memories, and all that.

All I can think of is to pray for the consolation and soothing of those who loved this person and that God will have mercy on him.

Lord, let this not be our adversary’s victory!

For a spiritually trained and aware man to take his life, I'd suggest he had a spiritual violation he couldn't deal with in this life.

Adultery is a sin and can be seen as an organic act that may be overlooked or "lived with".

Violating Almighty

(they don't call Him that for nuthin' .. )

God's Commandment would be something a man who wasn't born again, or never understood God's forgiveness might be more than he'd want to bear in this life.

sad ... and un-necesarry.

“We understand” is not to be confused with “You are normal and society is sick”

YBPDLN Ping List Ping!

The YBPDLN Ping List is generally published infrequently, but based on the exploits of the megachurch pastors, posts can spike for a period of time. If you would like on or off of this list please FReepmail me.

Well, one of Jesus Christ's very own Apostles, one of the twelve, did the same thing.

Pastor Isaac Hunter of Summit Church resigns amid adultery scandal

November 29, 2012|By Kate Santich, Orlando Sentinel

Isaac Hunter, the popular lead pastor at Summit Church in Orlando and the son of presidential spiritual advisor Joel Hunter, has resigned after admitting to an affair with a former church staffer.

The church, one of the fastest-growing in Central Florida, made the announcement on its blog Wednesday after mailing a letter to parishioners stating that Isaac Hunter’s “moral failing has made it impossible for him to continue in ministry.”

Isaac Hunter, 35, is a married father of three. He could not be reached for comment.

He founded Summit in 2002 with friends from his youth-ministry days in his father’s Longwood megachurch, Northland, A Church Distributed. Three-hundred people attended Summit’s first service, and it quickly outgrew its first home. It now has five locations and nearly 5,000 worshippers.

Many in both the church and community reacted with sadness to the news.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said Scott George, senior pastor at Pine Castle United Methodist Church and co-founder of the Community Food & Outreach Center in Orlando, one of many local nonprofit organizations where Summit members often volunteer. “He is a very gifted leader, a tremendous motivator. From the moment I heard about this, I’ve been in prayer for the entire church, the family, the community. The ripple effect of something like this is devastating.”

Isaac’s father, Joel Hunter, is a widely known evangelical pastor who became part of President Barack Obama’s inaugural Advisory Council on Faith-Based and Neighborhood Partnerships. He did not respond to calls seeking his comments.

In the letter to Summit members, newly appointed lead pastor John Parker said Isaac Hunter had offered his resignation Monday and that it had been accepted. Parker urged church members to avoid gossip “as much as humanly possible” and said the church “is bigger than any one of us.”

Experience has given me a very dim view of megachurches. Their large concentrations of money and power stifle accountability and puff up megastar preachers who cannot possibly pastor such giant congregations. In a perverted reversal of roles, these giant congregations often shower their "shepherds" with undue deference and vulgar wealth. The air of privilege bred in such unquestioned environments often leads to a dynastic succession to the megastars' offspring, who claim the divine right to inherit the lucrative family "businesses."

I know there are exceptions, but I doubt there are many. Human nature - our sin nature - is a very powerful force, and few megachurches retain the checks and balances required to keep their megastars' powerful egos in check. Wrecked megachurches often reveal a surprising lack of evil intent, just a realization that "it just happened." So it is with sin, and mega-anything allows that sin to be writ large.

Give me a smaller church where the pastors can be pastors and know the families and their children, and members truly fellowship together through life's ups and downs - not just while listening to the superstar's preaching.

Sad that a pastor would kill himself, especially at this time of year. Never having heard of, let alone heard him preach, I have no idea of his beliefs. A quick look at the church’s website doesn’t reveal very specific values or beliefs.

Suicide is a result of depression which can be an organic condition. Such a condition can be natural or can be caused or made worse through spiritual attack by the Accuser and his minions. Only God knows, but we do know that satan is a sore loser who hates Believers and tries to destroy them and their happiness. We also know that the deeper we get in our faith, the tougher the oponent from below.

Prayers up for his family as they get through this very difficult time.

Isaac Hunter, 36 and father of three, had resigned from his own megachurch after he admitted that he had engaged in an affair with a staff member. His wife of 13 years had filed a domestic-violence petition against Hunter, describing him as unstable, erratic and suicidal, according to the Orlando Sentinel.

Responding to a call from his brother who received a text message speaking of suicide, police found Isaac Hunter dead from a gunshot wound, said Officer Rob Pelton, Altamonte Springs Police Department spokesman. Police are investigating the death as a suicide, and the medical examiner will have a final cause of death in the next 10 days.

Joel Hunter is a putz and a charlatan. And that statement should in no way be taken as to denigrate Isaac Hunter.
