Man who bilked millions in Navy charity scam gets 28 years
CNN ^ | Mon December 16, 2013

The man, who calls himself Bobby Thompson -- but who authorities say is lawyer and former Army Capt. John Donald Cody -- also was ordered to pay more than $6 million in fines and more than $330,000 to cover court and prosecution costs, said Ronald Brown, bailiff at the Cuyahoga County court.

The defendant was convicted last month of running a telemarketing scam through his Florida-based U.S. Navy Veterans Association. Authorities said the charity raised about $100 million from donors across the country from 2002 to 2010, but little went to help veterans, The Plain Dealer newspaper of Cleveland reported.

Investigators said they found almost $1 million in a storage unit during the arrest.

I hope he was spraying it with insecticide to keep the silverfish off.

He’d better hope he doesn’t run into any veterans in prison.

If one reads the financials of most so called charities one well find out that the CEOs and boards pay them selves very very well.

Crimes of this magnitude go beyond party affiliation. It’s sociopathic, where you truly don’t give a damn whose lives you affect by gobbling up more money. For some who have this illness, the main thrill is getting away with as much as you can for as long as you can.
If he is intelligent and enterprising enough to corral this kind of cash, think of the good he could have facilitated.
Look on his cell phones, you’ll probably see portraits of some of his heroes, like Bernie Madoff, or P.T. Barnum or Machevelli.

Doesn’t United Way only contribute 5% to 10% they collect? If this guy would have sent in 10% to Wounded Warriors, would have been legit?

I suppose that the American Red Cross is a good organization. But its president has a pay of $500,000 per year plus expenses. I'm not okay with that.

So I don't donate to the Red Cross. I donate to the Salvation Army instead.

John Cody prior to this arrest was wanted by the FBI for charges that included ESPIONAGE. Google Images search "Bobby Thommpson" & "United State Navy Veterans Association" will yield him pictured with George W Bush and Rep Bohener amongst many others.

Cody has always been an genious wierdo.

United Way does 80-90% of the money they collect. Depends on which one though as there are a bunch of different ones. http://www.charitynavigator.org/

I don’t really have a problem with that. If you want talented people you need to pay them appropriately.

I'm shocked it's that high, years ago, when their CEO was busted for stealing money, I recall reading that their administrative costs ate up almost 90% of donations. But, looking through that website, I did see numerous United Way organizations. That means some could be run better than others.

Al Gore is unfortunately successful beyond belief. He could almost buy and sell Soros at this point. Al pays a price for all these ill gotten gains, he likely has 24hour guards working for him. Al Gore did not deserve a Nobel Prize, but he does deserve an Oscar Academy Award from his zombies for being The Most Sympathetic Evil-Doer now known.

The military should take complete care of veterans for whatever they need. There should be no deficiency in government support that needs private supplementing. These private fund raisers are a disgrace.

I don’t support them because of who they give money too. That and when I was in the air force we were forced to donate money to them.
