Dec 11 (Reuters) - Canada's postal service will phase out urban home delivery within five years and hike the cost of postage stamps to try to stem soaring losses, the post office said on Wednesday. Canada Post, like the U.S. Postal Service, is suffering as customers switch to digital communications. In August it said it was on track to run short of cash by the middle of 2014 unless major changes were made. The government-owned corporation - which has a mandate to be self-financing - last month reported a third-quarter loss of C$109 million ($103 million) before tax and said mail volumes had fallen 7.3 percent from the same period in 2012. It must also deal with a C$6.5 billion deficit in its pension plan.

Unfortunately what you say is, IMO, true. Picked up my mail that had accumulated during the past week. Huge pile and only one piece did not go in the trash.
OTOH, it is extremely worrisome how much we relay on the internet for most activities and information. If there is no mail delivery and someone decides to take the internet down, there is absolutely no way to receive business documents or payments. Pretty scary thought.
They should consider hiring illegals to do the delivery.
The USPS ought to be put up for sale and have companies like Amazon buy it up.

The problem is the benefits that the PO has. They’re outsized when compared to private enterprise. They’re already phasing out many carriers and using contractors who have no bennies. But Congress has used the PO as a jobs/welfare program for decades. That’s why they won’t get rid of it. I looked up the number of employees and retires once and it was more than a million...votes.

I use the PO to ship things almost everyday.

I’ve made a concerted effort to get off of catalog mailing lists and minimize the amount of paper I receive — even grocery store ads (yes, it’s been a fight, but it seems to be working). I get very little paper mail now and it would be just fine with me if there were a once-a-week mail delivery.
But Amazon doesn’t deliver it... The USPS does. As does FDX and UPS (they do the bulk of AMZN’s deliveries). Am I misunderstanding what you are saying?
They never will on a large scale. AMZn isn’t in the business of operating truck fleets and airplanes and sorting hubs.
