Some Parents Upset After L.I. School Removes Religious References From ‘Silent Night’

KINGS PARK, N.Y. (CBSNewYork) – The song “Silent Night” is at the heart of a concert controversy on Long Island.

Kings Park school officials removed several religious references, including “Holy infant” and “Christ the Savior,” from the popular Christmas carol before a student concert last week, WCBS 880′s Mike Xirinachs reported.

The intent was to avoid offending non-Christians, but the change left others upset.

I'm Jewish, and I love Christmas carols. Anyone who thinks they are "offensive" is an idiot!

I'm Catholic, and I remember the Jewish kids in my elementary school belting out the Christmas carols with the best of them. We also sung a couple of Channukkah songs thrown into the mix ("'Tis the week of Hannukah good cheer it is bringing. This holiday we celebrate with dancing and singing.")

I am also grateful that the kids around the block, Jacques, did not expose the whole Santa Claus thing to us. We just figured he skipped the Jewish kids.

Good times, and in most ways a better world.

Removing references to Jesus from a song about Jesus birth makes perfect sense if you are a liberal I guess.

I’ll bet they changed Away In the Manger too:

“Away in the manger, no room for a bed
The little carbon life form lay down his sweet head
The stars in the sky look down where he lay
The little carbon life form asleep on the hay...”

Thank you for your post. I, too, am Jewish, and I am beyond furious at the deliberate denigration of the Christmas observance.
Why the Christian parents of these school students do not boycott the concerts over this bigoted insult I do not know.
I absolutely REFUSE to adopt the generic greeting of “Happy Holidays” when meeting my Christian friends. This is what it is.
My Christian friend annually wish me a Happy New Year when it is time for my Jewish New Year.
Those people who claim to be offended at the sight of a creche or a lighted cross, are first cousins of those who tore and burnt down the Stars of David during the “Night of the Broken Glass.”

How in the world does one remove the Christian Lyrics from Silent Night?

Like this???

1. Silent night, XXXX night,
all is calm, all is bright
Round Yon XXXXX
XXXXXX and child.
XXXX infant, so tender and mild,
sleep in XXXXXXXX peace,
sleep in XXXXXXXX peace.

2. Silent night, XXXX night,
shepherds quake at the sight;
glories stream from XXXX afar,
XXXX hosts sing XXXXXXX!
XXXXX the XXXXX is born,
XXXXX the XXXXX is born!

3. Silent night, XXXX night,
Son of XXX , love’s pure light;
radiant beams from thy XXXX face
with the dawn of XXXXXXXX XXXXX,
XXXXX, XXXX, at thy birth,
XXXXX, XXXX, at thy birth.

4. Silent night, XXXX night,
wondrous star, lend thy light;
with the XXXXXXX let us sing,
XXXXXXX to our XXXX;
XXXXX the XXXXXX is born,
XXXXX the XXXXX is born!

My Jewish friend loves Christmas music. Claims it’s some of the most beautiful music ever written.

Anyone who is offended by those lyrics is too delicate for the real world. Those people have failed at life and need professional help.

In response to the liberal edited non-religuous and ungodly version sung in schools, I now submit the true version.

Merry Christmas to all!

1. Silent night, holy night,
all is calm, all is bright
round yon virgin
mother and child.
Holy infant, so tender and mild,
sleep in heavenly peace,
sleep in heavenly peace.

2. Silent night, holy night,
shepherds quake at the sight;
glories stream from heaven afar,
heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!

3. Silent night, holy night,
Son of God, love’s pure light;
radiant beams from thy holy face
with the dawn of redeeming grace,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth,
Jesus, Lord, at thy birth.

4. Silent night, holy night,
wondrous star, lend thy light;
with the angels let us sing,
Alleluia to our King;
Christ the Savior is born,
Christ the Savior is born!

BTW... Read up on the origins of Silent Night.

This stuff started a long time ago. When I was in 5th or 6th grade at the top rated public elementary school in North Dallas in like 1983 and 1984 they cut out a few words and then dropped the songs if I remember correctly. And this was in a conservative area; I don’t think people were aware at the time and the school was a test ground for progressive ideas.

And of course, a lot of the newer ones were written by Jews:

David Lehman’s Top 10 Christmas Songs Written by Jews

10. “The Christmas Waltz,” music and lyrics by Sammy Cahn and Julie Styne. “Listen to Sinatra’s version of this interestingly self-referential lyric.”

9. “Silver Bells,” music by Jay Livingston, lyrics by Ray Evans.

8. “Winter Wonderland,” music and lyrics by Felix Bernard. “Michael Feinstein was my source on this one. And I’m surprised! The lyrics involve an impromptu wedding ceremony performed by a Parson Brown. The most interesting lyrical moment is the rhyme of ‘snow man’ and ‘no, man.’ ”

7. “Santa Baby,” music and lyrics by Joan Ellen Javits and Philip Springer. “Very enjoyable song. The closest thing to a jazz song here. ‘Santa Baby, hurry down the chimney tonight.’ It adapts the conventions of Christmas songs to become a kind of love and seduction song. Eartha Kitt sings a swell version.”

6. “Sleigh Ride,” lyrics by Mitchell Parrish. “Sometimes people encounter it as a musical backdrop. On a personal note, I remember flying between the U.S. and England in the 1970s, and at Heathrow or Gatwick or JFK, you would always hear that. I had never liked it particularly, but because of the association it is very dear to me. Parrish—born Michael Hyman Pashelinsky in Lithuania—wrote the lyrics to one of the most famous of all jazz standards, Hoagy Carmichael’s ‘Stardust.’ ”

5. “I’ll Be Home for Christmas,” music by Buck Ram, lyrics by Walter Kent. “Like ‘White Christmas’ and ‘Have Yourself,’ this song was popular during World War II, and it appeals to a certain nostalgia and homesickness, not only on the parts of the troops abroad, but the loved ones at home.”

4. “I’ve Got My Love to Keep Me Warm,” music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. “This is a great song that is sometimes overlooked when people think of great Christmas songs, in part because of the other major Berlin effort in this category, and in part because it is one of the few songs on this list that can be done come snow or shine, year in and year out.”

3. “Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow,” lyrics by Sammy Cahn, music by Julie Styne. “This is my own favorite of the ‘Jingle Bells’-type Christmas song. I love the way it is used as the exit music in Die Hard.”

2. “The Christmas Song” (“Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire”), music and lyrics by Mel Tormé and Bob Wells. “These first two picks are traditional Christmas songs—they mention the holiday explicitly, are full of heartfelt sentiment, and may jerk a few tears.”

1. “White Christmas,” music and lyrics by Irving Berlin. “Bing Crosby’s version is the best-selling single ever.”

There was an old Saturday Night Live skit where everyone is singing Christmas carols, and after the first couple lines the only one who knows the words is the Jewish guy. Hilarious.

How about "Rudolf, the Red-Nosed Reindeer," by Jerry Marks?

Most great pop songs seem to have been written by Jewish guys. Including a fantastic melody by a fellow born into a Jewish family, who later converted to Reformed Christianity. His name was Felix Mendelssohn, and the song is "Joy to the World."
