Tolerance applies only to persons ... never to truth. America, it is said, is suffering from intolerance — it is not. It is suffering from tolerance. Tolerance of right and wrong, truth and error, virtue and evil, Christ and chaos. Our country is not nearly so overrun with the bigoted as it is overrun with the broadminded. That's worth repeating.
The elevation of tolerance to a first principle is not a particularly American problem, as much as it is a problem of Modernity.
Nevertheless, in America, the problem began with the conflation of civil tolerance (the First Amendment) and absolute tolerance (personal tolerance of evils).
