These sailors should have at the very least been given iodine as soon as they realised that there might be a problem. They have all probably got very reduced lifespans now due to something that was totally avoidable. Sue the government and take exemplary damages, ones that hurt and force them to jiggle the budget around or give them higher insurance premiums. Its the only way to force them not to be so stupid in future.

“What was I? Still a human being? Or was I the man of the future? If there were other bursts of radiation, other clouds drifting across seas and continents, would other beings follow me into this vast new world?

So close, the infinitesimal and the infinite. But suddenly I knew they were really the two ends of the same concept. The unbelievably small and the unbelievably vast eventually meet, like the closing of a gigantic circle. I looked up, as if somehow I would grasp the heavens, the universe, worlds beyond number. God’s silver tapestry spread across the night.

And in that moment I knew the answer to the riddle of the infinite. I had thought in terms of Man’s own limited dimension. I had presumed upon Nature. That existence begins and ends is Man’s conception, not Nature’s. And I felt my body dwindling, melting, becoming nothing.

My fears melted away and in their place came acceptance. All this vast majesty of creation, it had to mean something. And then I meant something too. Yes, smaller than the smallest, I meant something too. To God, there is no zero.”

“I still exist.”

-The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)

IIRC the Israelis lost a ship to a missile strike a few years ago because the anti-missile system on the ship was not turned on - in a war zone. There are probably quite a few examples of this kind of failure.

Not surprised at this if true.

There is so much denial over this nuke plant disaster it is astonishing

Nuke plants are fine. Nuke plants are fine. They’re safe and clean

Until the blow up and let out uncontrollable radiation.

Japan reacts by denying and lying. And we are so dumb.

It’s a nuke reactor failure.

Duh

Even and especially on this site

Rush is the worst. Recently a caller said nuke plants are dangerous and Rush excoriated him for being a tree higher before hanging up on him. Ignorantly ascribed all different opinions to the guy which he had never stated and hung up on him

This might turn out to be very bad. I hope not

In any case It will be a long time and more ridiculousness before people stop depending on these stupid things

The Long Island housewives kept one out of their backyard.

And they are not tree huggers

They will get promoted, a medal and quietly separated.

Cancer patients are warned not ride the subway etc when they are being treated with isotopes because will trigger the detectors.
But the multi Billion dollar, irreplaceable. National asset of one of our newest carriers has it’s rad gear in storage? So the fing Iranians don’t need a bomb, they just need to sail a freighter by upwind spewing cesium or polonium out of its engine smoke stack.

This story is entirely made up. Do you really think there are no working radiation detection systems on a nuclear powered aircraft carrier?

Of course not. No one said the equipment wasn't onboard. The story says it wasn't turned on.

First of all, you assume this regime cares about the people charged with defending it.
2nd, the Ship was named for a great American, Maybe it was a petty way of punishing it.
3rd....I bet the Capt was under orders to save money and not turn on the detection equipment.
Those poor sailors....Pray for their recovery.

Man oh man, I remember reading the stories of our navy being dispatched to that area. I thunk to myseff...this is not good. They will be exposed to high levels of radiation. If I recall correctly, the news reports were indicating there was little danger to our servicemen and woman. Yea...roger that.

The Incredible Shrinking Man (1957)

Just watched that movie last night for the second time. The first time was as a kid in '57. Great movie.

“USS Ronald Reagan & Fukushima”

Some good pictures of the ship’s decontamination process. I think this article is credible.

And, at the risk of being called sexist, why have women exposed in such a dangerous area?

No, men and women are not equal. In general, men are more expendable.
