1.3m losing unemployment benefits Saturday

WASHINGTON — An emergency federal program that acts as a lifeline for 1.3 million jobless workers will end Saturday, drastically curtailing government support for the long-term unemployed and setting the stage for a major political fight in the new year.

The program, in place since the recession started in 2008, provides up to 47 weeks of supplemental unemployment insurance payments to jobless people looking for work. Its expiration is expected to have far-reaching ramifications for the economy, cutting job growth by about 300,000 positions next year and pushing hundreds of thousands of households below the poverty line.

An extension of the unemployment program did not make it into the two-year budget deal that was passed just before Congress left on its winter recess. When the federal program expires, just 1 in 4 unemployed Americans will receive jobless benefits — the smallest proportion in half a century.

47 additional weeks they are probably already on. That plus the customary 26 or 47 weeks....99 weeks - NINETY NINE WEEKS. And they need more....

They had over a year to get one of those millions of jobs that Obama claims he created.

I see it all of the time with people I personally know. Very few recipients will even start seriously looking for a job until about 4 weeks from the benefits ending

I saw a story on the news about some unemployed guy who couldn’t afford his $1,100 a month apartment in NYC. I would advise moving as a start.

With 99 weeks of being at home watching TV, it is hard to believe they haven’t seen dozens of “The Cochran Firm’s” ads on TV hawking how “we’ll get your disability approved.”

These millions need to get one of those part time McDonald’s or Walmart jobs...Then they can at least qualify for food stamps and or welfare...

Geez...unemployed in NYC. And with a cheap apartment at that.

I’d bet he feels taking a lesser paying job is beneath him and/or his liberal arts education.

its Saturday, stooges day. today was the one where the war ended and now the boys are hungry. they look for jobs and get tricked into reenlisting. as larry signs on the dotted line, he exclaims “oh boy, a job at last”.
that type of ambition is long lost. today they would yell, oh boy, an extension, plus food stamps and heating assistance.

Can someone explain to me how curtailing UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS will hurt JOB GROWTH? On the surface, it makes no sense.
