Hudson River town wonders what's next as GE plant heads south in latest NY manufacturing loss

FORT EDWARD, New York — When General Electric moves jobs from its capacitor plant in this Hudson River town next year, worker Mark Rock figures he might have to leave, too.

About 200 jobs will head south as soon as September when GE sends local operations to Florida to cut costs. While New York has had successes in the constant geographical tug of war for jobs, manufacturing jobs like these have been dwindling for decades. People in this area south of the Adirondack Mountains are the latest to wonder what comes next.

"The high-paying jobs that we have now in the area are going to shrink," said Rock, a 41-year-year-old married father of two. "If I don't find something making at least 20 bucks an hour in New York state, then I'm skipping town."

The loss of manufacturing jobs is a national trend, but New York has felt the sting more than some other states. Paul Blackley, an economics professor at Le Moyne College in Syracuse, said New York state lost 42 percent of manufacturing jobs from 1990 through 2006. Over the same period, Florida lost 18 percent.

Blackley said there's no single reason for New York's drop, but business costs and an older infrastructure likely play a role.

"I think your tax climate, your labor costs, your old capital are probably three of the biggest factors, not only in this specific move, but a lot of the moves that you see out of New York state," he said.

The GE plant has sat by a narrow stretch of the Hudson River in this town of 6,000 since World War II. It makes electrical capacitors for power transmission systems and industrial uses.

Well as soon as the SAFE ACT is repealed [you wish!] and/or the Cuomonitistas in Albany and NYC and his communista cronies from downstate and wherever are removed from office by election or by keep`n `n bearing our arms, barin` our arms,

we`uns don gonna start a gun factory up`n here in these here mountains n export `em to Connecticut and Commiefornia. This is after the shootin` war is over in 2014 between the sheriffs, the hillbillies on one side and state troopers, EPA and DEC on the other side, is won by the PEOPLE. Watch the show about to begin, folks! It`s only a matter of time and some foolish gung-ho Coiumonista makes the first bad mistake and starts a revolution up here, coz we got the Mohawks on our side too with plenty of AUTO firepower, plus they still take scalps...

Gee, this is happening on the combined political “watches” of Gov. Cuomo, that jerk before him (Patterson?), Mayor Bloomturd, who’s the Democrat jerk who heads the NY State Assembly (Silver?), and the new Comrade Mayor DeBlasio, etc.

No wonder GE is fleeing the state. Even Obama’s contracts kickback deals aren’t enough to keep the rats from fleeing to better tax policy environments.

We’ll remember in November, 2014. Hope the rest of the New Yorkers do too.

The EPA’s PCB cleanup plan of the Hudson River was and is a disaster. PCBs, when left alone under sediment, break down naturally over time into basically harmless components.

EPA, in its infinite stupidity, is disturbing the overlying, protective sediment, which is keeping PCBs from leaking into the water.

I think this case happened during the EPA rule of marxist Carol Browner in the Clinton Administration.

Believe me, this isn’t the only dumbassed thing the EPA has done to either hurt the environment or to cost the taxpayers a lot of unwarranted money.

I know, I worked on EPA cases. The leftists who have headed it under the Democrats have perverted it into an anti-business agency, while decent EPA workers are made to enforce downright stupid policies which hurt the economy and the workers.

And it isn’t going to get any better. The new EPA director acts like a tough guy and looks like one too. It’s going to be a long 2-3 years until the Republicans have a chance to correct this situation.

Meanwhile the economy keeps crawling along, and millions of decent workers have no jobs. You figure it out.

It started during the Clinton administration, but I believe the EPA's final record of decision was released in 2001 when Christie Whitman was the new EPA director in the Bush administration.

But the good news is that Pete Seeger has an even better view of the Hudson from his palatial estate!

“The real story is that these jobs are moving to a lower cost STATE, not another country. Capacitor mfg is not high-tech, and could have easily gone to Mexico or China. Kudos to GE.”

This is the driving force behind the Dems’ push to nationalize their socialism; they can’t afford “greener pastures” within our borders. ObamaCare and fed tax policies will smack all 50 states in an attempt to destroy competitive advantages some enjoy.

Reminds me of the 2000's here in Michigan with Gov. Grandholm and Kawame in Detroit. Major employers left, debt was racked up until she was term-limited and Kawame was charged. It was awful, the news never got better and the crap kept rolling down hill... Even though our Gov has been a RINO as of late, the State had enough common sense to vote him in and a Conservative House and Senate.

I Don't think their are enough Conservatives left in NY ( CT and MA for that matter too ) to make a seed change in the next election cycle.

NY Freeper's please prove me wrong...

When 42 % of your jobs leave the State something is wrong with the State. I should know I live in Maryland, practically nothing left here but Government.

Yep - those that kept complying with the PC demands (Kodak for example) ran themselves into the ground. The smart ones will run themselves out of such States.

Well I'm not kidding!

Florida has way too many people from failed states bringing their failed liberal voting pasts with them.
Do they acknowledge they were wrong?
Oh hell no!

They just spread the disease.
If New York is paying them retirement incomes, those people should pay New York taxes on that income, to New York.

And it would be nice if they were only allowed to vote in New York!
