In balmy 2C weather the ice has softened in places, posing a hazard for wanderers, but the Akademik Shokalskiy is still stuck
Sunday began as the days now always begin on the MV Akademik Shokalskiy, with a briefing for the passengers on the status of the rescue effort.
The crew and expedition leaders had been poring over weather and ice forecasts and speaking with maritime rescue agencies and other ships' captains since the early morning. At 10am they decided it was time to warn the rest of the passengers to steel themselves for the extreme-case scenario if the icebreakers could not get us out within the next 48 hours: an air evacuation.

Shackleford didn’t need no stinkin’ helicopters.
Clearly racist as I see no black folks. How can science thrive without this diversity?
I assume you’re thinking of Ernie Shackleton?
Don’t know the answer, however I would love to take that trip. I am not an environmental whacko but have watched travel shows and read “Endurance” and it would be exciting, but very expensive.
Global warming at last?
They might as well know, they could easily die out there. Even if they have an air rescue, there must be some real dangers in doing so landing and picking the up and taking off. I think we will see some obits out of it.
Except it’s the same story 10 days in a row...
Importantly, January is the second warmest month in Antarctica, averaging about -18F. February is considerably colder, and by March the temperature drops radically.
So there actually is a timetable for them to get their rear ends out of there. If they miscalculate, even air rescue might be difficult or impossible.
And that’s just the temperature and the weather. The ice itself is another factor. If it either contracted or expanded radically, it could crush the lower hull of the ship.
Ditto.
For $23,000 (maybe more now, I haven't checked in a couple of years), a nuclear powered Russian icebreaker will take you to the North Pole.
Obamunists still try to point to Bush whenever any of their Messiah’s multitude of faults are brought to light.
“But Bush... but Bush...”
Still.
Yes Shackleton, my bad. Trying to watch the Chiefs game and write comments at the same time, probably a bad plan.
Stupid can be painfully cold and luckily they all volunteered for it.
A couple of those people appear to have been (poorly) photoshopped in. Look at the woman second from our right on the front row, and is that a spare leg next to her?
Oh heck man... david letterman said that people can water-ski in the Antarctic these days and algore swore to him that this was the truth!
As fun as plinking penguins must be, I'd never pay $25K for the trip.
The only downside is the outrageous cost of 22 long rifle rounds!
Yeah but you can more than make up the cost by popping them in a flipper and then filming "dramatic" documentary footage of leopard seals and killer whales feeding on penguins. That's the way its done you know?
According to Gore the ice should have ALREADY been gone by 2013...
It's funny. Liberals scammers could do the 'once in a lifetime' trip for the next 500 years... or as long as the world produces gullible liberals.
The world is laughing...
