Utah man sentenced for crime committed on LDS mission in Chubbuck

POCATELLO — A Cedar City, Utah, man convicted of felony injury to a child stemming from inappropriate contact with a 16-year-old child in 2012, was placed on probation Monday and sentenced to spend the next 10 days in Bannock County Jail.

Derrick Starley was serving a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chubbuck when the incident occurred. He was originally charged with sexual battery of child 16 or 17 years old...

Starley pleaded guilty to the reduced charge in early November as part of a plea agreement through which prosecutors agreed that they would not oppose probation but also said they would likely ask for local jail time.

JaNiece Prices, assistant chief deputy prosecutor for Bannock County did just that. She said that based on the presentence investigation report and psycho-sexual evaluation, Starley did not appear to be a substantial risk to re-offend, but that he did need treatment for an addiction to pornography.

She asked Sixth District Judge Robert Naftz for local jail time and that the treatment be a part of Starley’s conditions for probation. She also recommended Starley’s probation be a lengthy term to assure he has time for that treatment.

The victim’s father then spoke to the judge, conveying the depth to which the incident has affected the victim and their family. He then said the family has forgiven Starley and only hopes that he gets the treatment he needs.

SNIP

The judge sentenced Starley to serve 10 days in the Bannock County Jail in addition to the five days he spent in jail when first arrested, meaning he will spend Christmas in jail.

“You affected people by your conduct,” Naftz told Starley. “There has to be some kind of consequence so you understand.”

No I am a convert at the age of 38.

I was all alone never met a missionary only a friend who was a recent convert he was still new all he did was just give me a copy of the Book of Mormon and mark a few pages I had that book for a year that book always got in the way no matter where I put it.

One day cleaning house I was going to throw it away as I stood over the wastepaper basket I remember a marked **passage in the back of the Bk so I read it and kneel over the wastepaper basket and sincerely pray to the Father and asked it the Book was true in the name of Jesus Christ, I received the most over whelming Joy that I ever experience in my life I just had to know more about this Church...

**3 Behold, I would exhort you that when ye shall read these things, if it be wisdom in God that ye should read them, that ye would remember how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men, from the creation of Adam even down until the time that ye shall receive these things, and ponder it in your hearts.

4 And when ye shall receive these things, I would exhort you that ye would ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ, if these things are not true; and if ye shall ask with a sincere heart, with real intent, having faith in Christ, he will manifest the truth of it unto you, by the power of the Holy Ghost.

5 And by the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.

BTW I investigate the Church inside out I went the Calvary book store on West 57 st. in NYC. I read the Walter Martin stuff and even at that time I encounter a copy of the Kinderhook pamphlet. As with the stuff I took it to the Lord asked for understanding by than I had many books from the Church Library.

I have read all of the stuff on Polygamy Joseph and Helen Mar Kimball 14 it was not for time it was for eternity aka a spiritual wife. BYW when Helen Mar Kimball did marry for time she was very fertile she had 11 children.

What I noticed was every time I read Martins, Tanners, stuff etc. I get this verboten feeling but every time I read the Bible and the Book of Mormon peace came over me.

It was like one of my first lesson taught from the Holy Ghost in discernment.

The opposition had nothing in him therefore he can not impart peace love or joy his only tools are doubt and fear create situations to lead one away from etc.

But things of the Lord bring comfort and joy, peace I know when I did something the spirit of the Lord departed but when I was doing what I should be doing that void is fill with the Lord presents.

For the first time in my life the pages of the Bible many of those passages laid dormant for years at no time when I was Presbyterian was some of those passages even discussed in the Bible let along considered.

I know I was there in the late 50’s early 60’s we have Sunday school but it was basic stuff milk, hardly any meat.

I also been to a Reformed and the Nazarene Church you see I was the only one in the family who attended church. Dad was Catholic and mom Protestant in those day there were always those good on Sun and the rest the WK but they allowed me to go to Church even drove me when younger.

I always took things literal and witnessing behavior of saying one thing and doing another bother me. After I left home I went on a quest for about 18 years looking for the things I read in the Bible I just knew they have to be true.
And no matter what the Clergy of the day all try to say that was long ago etc.

So I know you are very turn off by Mormonism, but for me I know this is Jesus Christ Church and that Joseph Smith was the Lord’s Prophet to bring forth the Restoration in these Latter days and I also know a Prophet is only a prophet when he is acting as a Prophet the rest of the time he has issues to work out like the rest of us.

I know WHEN I have applied the council given me in the scriptures I have received many endless blessings, many I am not even aware of at the time.

Where you are at Anton.Rutter and how you feel I need to respect that amputations and healing are not an over night change.

It is not easy for anyone who is going through this I just pray peace for the soul.

In all due Respect.

Thanks, restornu.

Missionaries go through a training process before being sent to serve their particular mission. How long does that process last?

If this missionary had completely all of his paperwork, training, and review process the day after President Monson made his October 6 announcement, then it would mean he immediately went into the field and committed this act - because it happened in October 2012.

BTW, I don't view the actions of this young man as casting a bad light on the LDS.

I simply view the outcome with some suspicion of outside influence, although there aren't enough facts in the article to do anything but speculate.

You just happened to be the lucky (?) person whose question about Jesus I used to illustrate the MORMON position.

And It just went from there.

Sorry it wasted your time.

You must be a dried up shrew with no one to share your life with!

MAybe...

But all that aside, I fail to understand why you are wasting your time on the Mormons?

Why do you judge that my time is wasted?

Finally, at the end of the day, this article shouldn’t even have been posted on FR in my view.

Are you ALWAYS this judgemental?

President Thomas S. Monson announced that effective immediately, young men may begin their full-time missionary service following their graduation from high school, even if they are only 18 at the time.

Did GOD reveal this to him; or is it yet just another man-made rule of the church??

May the Great Redeemer of the world, even Jesus Christ, who’s Salvation is unto all who truly come unto Him, bless and keep you and yours.

As long as you kiss up to joseph smith; too!

What Joseph Smith Means to Us  (From: various sources )

"He (Joseph Smith) is the man through whom God has spoken... yet I would not like to call him a savior, though in a certain capacity he was a god to us, and is to the nations of the earth, and will continue to be."
- Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses 8:321

"You call us fools; but the day will be, gentlemen and ladies, whether you belong to this Church or not, when you will prize brother Joseph Smith as the Prophet of the Living God, and look upon him as a god..."
- Herber C. Kimball, Journal of Discourses 5:88

"If we get our salvation, we shall have to pass by him [Joseph Smith]; if we enter our glory, it will be through the authority he has received. We cannot get around him [Joseph Smith]"
- (as quoted in 1988 Melchizedek Priesthood Study Guide, p. 142)
There is "no salvation without accepting Joseph Smith. If Joseph Smith was verily a prophet, and if he told the truth...no man can reject that testimony without incurring the most dreadful consequences, for he cannot enter the kingdom of God"
- Joseph Fielding Smith, Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 1, p.190

"I tell you, Joseph holds the keys, and none of us can get into the celestial kingdom without passing by him. We have not got rid of him, but he stands there as the sentinel, holding the keys of the kingdom of God; and there are many of them beside him. I tell you, if we get past those who have mingled with us, and know us best, and have a right to know us best, probably we can pass all other sentinels as far as it is necessary, or as far as we may desire. But I tell you, the pinch will be with those that have mingled with us, stood next to us, weighed our spirits, tried us, and proven us: there will be a pinch, in my view, to get past them. The others, perhaps, will say, If brother Joseph is satisfied with you, you may pass. If it is all right with him, it is all right with me. Then if Joseph shall say to a man, or if brother Brigham say to a man, I forgive you your sins, "Whosoever sins ye remit they are remitted unto them;" if you who have suffered and felt the weight of transgression—if you have generosity enough to forgive the sinner, I will forgive him: you cannot have more generosity than I have. I have given you power to forgive sins, and when the Lord gives a gift, he does not take it back again."
- Orson Hyde, Journal of Discourses, Vol. 6, p.154-155

"It is because the Lord called Joseph Smith that salvation is again available to mortal men.... If it had not been for Joseph Smith and the restoration, there would be no salvation,"
- Bruce McConkie, Mormon Doctrine, p. 396, 670

They succeeded in killing Joseph, but he had finished his work.
He was a servant of God, and gave us the Book of Mormon.
He said the Bible was right in the main, but, through the translators and others, many precious portions were suppressed, and several other portions were wrongly translated; and now his testimony is in force, for he has sealed it with his blood.
As I have frequently told them, no man in this dispensation will enter the courts of heaven, without the approbation of the Prophet Joseph Smith, Jun.
Who has made this so?
Have I?
Have this people?
Have the world?
No; but the Lord Jehovah has decreed it.
If I ever pass into the heavenly courts, it will be by the consent of the Prophet Joseph.
If you ever pass through the gates into the Holy City, you will do so upon his certificate that you are worthy to pass.
Can you pass without his inspection?
No; neither can any person in this dispensation, which is the dispensation of the fulness of times.
In this generation, and in all the generations that are to come, everyone will have to undergo the scrutiny of this Prophet.
They say that they killed Joseph, and they will yet come with their hats under their arms and bend to him; but what good will it do them, unless they repent?
They can come in a certain way and find favor, but will they?
Brigham Young,

BTW none of this changes the crude statement you made you are real, here, and alive, now own it!

"Now if any of you will deny the plurality of wives, and continue to do so, I promise that you will be damned;

and I will go still further and say, take this revelation, or any other revelation that the Lord has given,

and deny it in your feelings, and I promise that you will be damned.

Brigham Young - JoD 3:266 (July 14, 1855)

...now own it!
