We have new detail overnight about the australian ice-breaker trying to make its way to free a ship trapped in the ant ararctic for a week now. Gio benitez is here with the latest. Reporter: Good morning to you, amy.

That ship trapped in ice since christmas morning. Hours ago, we learned that that ice breaker has failed to rescue the passengers. At least for now.

This morning, 74 passengers on board the stranded ship have no idea if an ice breaker sent to free it will ever get there. The powerful aurora australis had high hopes of getting to the trapped ship. It was ten miles away when it haed to turn around.

No visibility. As soon as the weather rs, they'll probably have a t another go. Reporter: The rescue leader specking to us moments ago from the stranded ship.

The Guardian site devoted entirely to this voyage hasn't made an update for several days other than to periodically delete reader comments. Last night there were nearly 300, running overwhelmingly critical of global warming. This morning there are 80 comments. LOL!

Sea ice is at record levels in Antarctica. Also, keep in mind that the ships are getting stuck in ice during summertime down there.

Maybe what is needed (short of an evacuation and abandonment of the passenger ship) is a real Russian icebreaker. I don’t know their ice thickness ratings, but I suspect they have some ships with greater capability.

THIRD icebreaker abandons rescue of climate scientists boat in Antarctica, media fog, obscure, don’t say “climate”

Welcome to Media-Sport, where we score points watching a part of the media dance around the hysterical folly of an Antarctic climate science expedition trapped in sea ice for six nights (and counting). Propaganda is not just what makes the news, but what doesn’t.

With three ice-breaker rescue ships trying to reach them, the latest news is that the scientists and media entourage may have to abandon ship and be helicoptered to safety (though right now even that is not possible due to the very rough weather). The ABC news home page at time of posting this has zero references to “Antarctica”, but does say there are cracks in ice around a stranded ship.

The decision to abandon the latest attempt was made at 9am Australian EST. The SMH story appeared at 4.40pm, and the ABC reported it on “just in” at 5.40pm. Marvelous how “fast” satellite communications and social media can work. No mention on The Guardian Australia site (despite them having a reporter on the boat). No twitters seen on the @GdnAntarctica, or @guardian, @alokjha (their journalist), @loztopham (their documentary maker), or #spiritofmawson or @ProfChrisTurney. (Perhaps those trapped on the boat don’t know?)

Wait - the polar ice caps aren’t melting? This whole “global warming/climate change” thing isn’t actually “settled science” but a naked power grab?

Last report I saw the ship had plenty of food and power and was fine. Just stuck in the ice

I didn't say otherwise. Summer is only starting--they've got a couple more months to hope for warming, and plenty of time to evacuate by helicopter if the ice doesn't relent. But, really--a non-ice breaking ship on a "prove global warming" lark in the Antarctic ice? It's the 21st century equivalent of looking for the Northwest Passage.

Personally, I think that whomever is concerned enough to do this should airdrop suntan lotion and tropical-weight clothing and be done with it!

At least the rescue efforts are not hampered by Climate.

I saw a story on this, and they have 7 weeks of food. The leader of the group keeps posting videos to the internet...and he seems a little too ‘cheery’.

His band of fools on the ship are primarily ‘activists’ and ‘tourists’...i.e. completely unprepared if power is lost, etc.

So far, 3 different ice breakers have failed (and tens of thousands of dollars worth of fuel has been burned) trying to get these idiots out...and this guy doesn’t seem concerned at all.

Time will tell - the weather could help them...or the weather could make 7 weeks seem like a very short supply of food. Some pilot may have to risk his life trying to lift people out with a helicopter before this is over.

Yeah one of their big nuclear powered breakers. I doubt that will happen because these rescues are expensive and the insurer of the stranded MV Akademik Shokalskiy is weighing the costs. The French will be sending an invoice for the costs of their breaker's response. The Chinese are still adding to their invoice and the Australians are drafting a sizeable bill. Others will likely be submitting invoices as well.

The French also sent a breaker? Is that the #3 breaker?

As to the chinese and Australian invoices, they should be billed to Al Gore.
