At 97 years old, Johnie Beckerleg has a variety of stories to tell, but after a trip to Wal–Mart he added one to the books he never thought he would about a man who tried stealing the car he was still sitting in.

It's an unimaginable story but for Johnie Beckerleg of Dilworth it became reality.

"It never dawned on me that anything like that could happen," Beckerleg said.

While doing some Christmas shopping last Sunday at Walmart in Dilworth, Beckerleg stayed in his son's pickup in the parking lot when a man suddenly swung open the door and jumped inside.

"He grabbed me and started getting real rough with me but he wasn't able to do what he wanted to do because he was too drunk so I hit him as hard as I could."

With keys in the ignition and the truck running, Beckerleg had to think fast, knowing this man was determined get away with the vehicle.

"He took off right away and just missed a car by a fraction. He made a big curve and I said this is it, do or don't," Beckerleg said.

The 97–year–old man made a move for his life.

Always lock the doors if you are going to sit in a running car and have a 1911 within arms reach.

Fixed it.

Nearly anything in the range from 9 x 18 to .45 acp will do. CZ82s with two 12 round mags are under three hundred, and the ammo is cheap & effective, especially at close range.

A few 230 grain hollow points can be very discouraging to a carjacker — even a drunk one.

I remember the story of a teenager in the 1950s who was tasked with delivering a package to a very elderly man, but being young and foolish he didn’t pay much attention when his boss explained very seriously that he had to approach the old man in a very careful manner.

Entering the open door of the old man’s house, package in hand, he waltzed in to see the old guy in his rocker, under a blanket. And then he noticed the enormous hand cannon pointed at him. He left the package and got the heck out of there.

He said it finally made sense a year or two later, when he was asked to attend the old man’s open casket visitation. In his old man’s hands was clasped the tool of his trade in his younger days, a running iron(*).

(*) Used by cattle rustlers to change brands on stolen cattle. Mere possession could get you strung up in the Old West.

"For a man who uses a walker and who just a few weeks ago was told he only had six months to live, Beckerleg sustained a dislocated shoulder and a bruised hand."

Wanna bet this tough old bird lasts a LOT longer? Good for him!

You have the right to repel the agressor by whatever means necessary, including deadly force.
The criminal has lost all rights by attacking you.

Going to war in a car...running or not...it’s a good idea to lock the doors.

mug shot of perp, Joshua Stanley Fox

from the story in the Duluth newspaper:

"Fox has a lengthy rap sheet in Clay County dating back to 1997, including a conviction for making terroristic threats in 2008, a felony, and obstruction in 2012, a misdemeanor, according to Clay County District Court records."

Citizen Fox will now being going up for kidnapping, grand theft auto, felony assault, etc. He may yet get out again in time to kill someone, especially given his special status.

Thanks for providing the info on the perp. Looks like a real winner, committing ever more violent transgressions.

I hope the victim lives long enough to get some justice from this creep.
