Congress Turns Its Back on the Military Again
Roll Call ^ | 30 Dec 13 | Ted Daywalt and Bill Manofsky

Posted on 12/30/2013 6:56:44 PM PST by SkyPilot

In late December, a two-year budget deal passed the Senate by a bipartisan 64-36 vote. It includes a provision that cuts a full 1 percent from future annual cost-of-living-adjustments to the retirement packages of all veterans under the age of 62.

This COLA reduction in the budget deal applies to active duty service members who have yet to retire and to those who have been disability retired from the military as a result of their wounds defending our nation in Iraq and Afghanistan. The fact that this provision was included speaks volumes to veterans who put their lives on the line and sacrificed for America.

Veteran service organizations have calculated that a gunnery sergeant or sergeant first class (E-7) retiring today with 20 years of service would lose more than $80,000 in income by age 62. Officers could lose as much as $140,000.

This cut was only directed at the military and not the rest of the Federal civilian workforce, except for new hires effective Jan. 1, 2014. Essentially, the congressional staffers who wrote the provision excluded themselves from it.

One would not mind taking a financial hit as long as it is evenly applied to all in the interests of deficit reduction. However, to be a part of a group specifically singled out by Congress while other entitlements are untouched smacks of grave injustice. The all-voluntary military now only represents roughly 1 percent of the nation and thus is an easy target to be discounted by Congress and the general public as a whole.

Beware the “fix” Congress and Hagel are proposing, it will only exempt those military who are “medically retired early” - even for non-combat or combat related injuries. Disabled retirees who served 20 years or more and VA disabled retirees are not exempted, and will be screwed over, again.

Unalloyed, craven, and despicable betrayal of the men and women who have protected our freedom and continue to do so today!

America demands Justice for the Fallen of Benghazi!

O stranger, tell the Lacedaemonians that we lie here, obedient to their command.

Listen, O isles, unto me; and hearken, ye people, from far; The LORD hath called me from the womb; from the bowels of my mother hath he made mention of my name. (Isaiah 49:1 KJV)

As a Veteran and a member of a Veterans Organization I would not advocate for any young American to join the Obama military.

He has turned it over to Queers, fired decent Generals, put women in Combat, cut their budgets, beyond safe allowances, set up ROE’s that get them killed, arrested and imprisoned them for killing the enemy, refused purple hearts to the wounded at Ft. Hood, and now screws over them after retirement.

Billions to dead social security recipients. Hundreds of millions, for just one year, to dead civilian federal employees. Make believe pig farmers. Make believe EPA secret agents living in 5 star hotels. And the only place the Democrats can find money to give to HEADSTART and Education ( and everyone knows how successful those programs have been) to buy Democrat votes is from the retired Veterans. Makes you proud to be an American.

Congress creates the rules and regulations of the Military. The President has little say. All done under the GOP watch in Congress. They are all worthless.

Sorry, the President has decided upon which Generals he’d have sacked, decided to eliminate “don’t ask, don’t tell”, had his generals under his Sec of Defense write the lethal (to our military) rules of engagement, etc.

Don’t try to deflect that responsibility to Republicans in Congress.

I think they got tired of the petty concerns of the peasants and worked to solve that problem. Congress now behaves as if masses of angry voters have zero effect on job security. Appears as if they have no worries because they are relected by the dead, illegals, outcome-based electronic voting machines, and multitudes of disembodied absentee ballots.

There is no fear of God before their eyes.

It’s a “cut” in future increases. Everyone has their own pet increases. I feel that the military are sort of like the commercials to raise money for sick dogs and cats. We don’t have the money folks. I’m in favor of taking care of our vets. I’m married to one but we have to stop these automatic increases.

The ROE has been ineffective since we engaged in combat. Secondly, DADT was censored with help from the GOP.

Stop protecting the GOP.

“...Stop protecting the GOP.”
*******************************************
I, along with many others, have been working and continue to work to have true conservatives take over the Republican Party. I’ll do nothing to protect the GOPe who, for the time being, are at the controls of the national party. But I will work to protect and help conservatives such as Ted Cruz. They haven’t given up the struggle and neither have I. 2014 should be a year we (conservatives) make VERY significant gains.

I don’t have a lot of truck with DEFEATISTS who walk away from the battle.

I would agree with you if the same “standard” was applied to all other government workers and welfare leeches also.

The message couldn’t be more clear: put your life on the line to preserve the nation and get f*cked.

Soon, we’ll only be getting the sort of defective mediocrities in the armed forces that we now see in congress.

Some day the chickens may come home to roost and our military may, just may turn on the gubmint. Think it can’t or won’t happen? You may be right but don’t be surprised if it does. Certainly the leadership has been doing everything it can to add enough fuel to the fire.

If not the entire military, there certainly may/could be a few who decide enough is enough and take on certain aspects of the current administration who are obviously pushing for civil enrest.

Keep your powder dry, you may need it.

That’s a fact. The worst Congress to ever be seated.
