Dogs' pot poisoning soars as pets dig through trash, stash
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | December 31, 2013 | Katherine Seligman

San Francisco veterinarian Jill Chase had just finished hosting a birthday party for her son 10 years ago when her dog went limp. After investigating what might have caused the problem, she discovered the culprit: cannabis-infused butter that a neighbor had dumped in the garbage down the street. Her dog, a Tibetan terrier who was a habitual trash surfer, had eaten a large dose.

Personally, I’m impressed that you and Java remember those days. I have only a vague recollection that I once had hair and that it reached my shoulders (and that I voted for Nixon in ‘72).

My collie loves her beer too. I usually let her sip the dregs from a bottle, but I would never give her a full can. The little bit she does get tends to put her down for a bit anyway.

As far as pot, my wife’s dachshund got into her stash a long while back. She said she came home from work and the pup was laying around acting like she was half dead. She rushed her to the vet, and when the vet asked if it was possible that she got into any “plants,” my wife fessed up and said that it was very likely she ate some pot. The whole office had a good chuckle, and when a check of her vitals showed that she was perfectly healthy, they told her to bring the pooch home and let her enjoy the buzz.

Remember that the active ingredient in marijuana, THC, is heat activated. Just eating the plant won’t do much of anything. Making butter with it, however, is probably the most potent use since THC is also fat soluble, you’re basically activating it and injecting it directly into the lipids in the butter. If this dog ate more than a few tablespoons, it doesn’t surprise me that it’s dead. I once put just a little bit of “shake” from a baggie into a tea diffuser with some orange pekoe, and I slept for 14 hours straight.

On cold January mornings, Jake and I would walk out on the ice at Prior Lake, MN., which supported a small city of fishing shacks. I always thought ice fishing was an excuse to drink in the morning, judging from the beer cans and schnapps bottles.
Jake was always a friendly greeter to the fishermen and both of us were offered a cold beer. Jake would lap the beer is slowly poured from a can. Half way through the second can, he'd start burping and “bubbling up” from his nose, which was a signal it was time to go home and take a nap...

“Come to think of it, I don’t recall Cheech and Chong ever having a dog.”

They did. Cheech got the munchies.

“Come to think of it, I don’t recall Cheech and Chong ever having a dog.”

They did. He ate their stash. They had to follow him around for three days to get it all back.
Chong: “What kind of weed is this?”
Cheech: “Labrador.”
Chong (gagging): “Not bad, man!”

I suspect that the biggest problems come from cancer patients. Even two decades ago, oncology offices really tap danced around that patients should smoke a lot of marijuana (”the ‘m’ herb”) to help them eat, as good nutrition could extend their lives by months, perhaps long enough for the chemotherapy to work.

They couldn’t say it directly, of course. However, as soon as patients found out they would stop vomiting and could eat, many smoke a lot, so had a large supply on hand.
