Helicopter Rescue for Stranded Antarctic Ship on Hold for Better Weather
ABC News ^ | December 31, 2013 | Gio Benitez, Anthony Castellano, Mallory Thompson and Ben Krolowitz

An air rescue for the passengers aboard a research ship that has been trapped in Antarctic ice for a week will wait for a break in the weather to start airlifting people from the vessel, Australian maritime authorities say.

The 74 scientists, tourists and crew aboard the Akademik Shokalskiy, a Russian-crewed research vessel touring the Antarctic, have been trapped in ice since Christmas Eve. A helicopter on board a Chinese icebreaker, the Snow Dragon, will be used to collect the passengers once there is a break in the weather, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said in a Monday night conference call.

But the helicopter rescue must wait for a break in the weather before it can attempt a rescue, and conditions aren't expected to improve before Wednesday.

"At the moment we're just dealing with each day as it comes and looking after each other and supporting each other as best we can," expedition leader Chris Turney told ABC News overnight. "It's raining at the moment. It's heavy winds. It's poor visibility, so we're not going to be flying today, possibly not even tomorrow."

The only thing bigger than the carbon footprint these global warming tourists are leaving, is their collective ego.

As soon as the cloud cover dissipates, the solar powered ice-breaker, ‘Sunshine Lollipop’ will be under way.

That was supposed to be a five week cruise. They’re half way through week four. I’m wondering when the eat, drink and be merry will run out. Someone knows when the rationing has to start. Obviously that’s past the five week mark.

An ending similar to the one in Clancy’s “Rainbow 6” would not upset me too much.

The line between reality and satire gets blurry when liberals talk about global warming. The irony here is profound.

Thank goodness for global warming, otherwise these scientists would get really, really cold.

How many ways are these so-called scientists really scam artists?

Maybe a real newspaper (not the New York Times) can ask a few questions - like "did these 'scientists' have their trip paid for by the fools who signed up to go along?" Was this a free vacation scam rather than real research?

I'd like to know.

That was supposed to be a five week cruise.

This reminds me of an of ancient sea shanty of another cruise gone wrong...

Just sit right back and you'll hear a tale,
A tale of a fateful trip
That started from this tropic port
Aboard this tiny ship.

The mate was a mighty sailing man,
The skipper brave and sure.
Five passengers set sail that day
For a three hour tour, a three hour tour.

The weather started getting rough,
The tiny ship was tossed,
If not for the courage of the fearless crew
The minnow would be lost, the minnow would be lost.

Time for Gio Benitez, Anthony Castellano, Mallory Thompson and Ben Krolowitz to look into this...

Aboard this tiny ship.

Talk about poetic license. That was no ship.

The oceanographer on board, who got a free ride and was paid, was collecting data on water temperature as they sailed from New Zealand to Antarctica. He was going to do a paper. I’m glad someone finally did that. /sarc

I’m not sure if he was amazed he was getting paid or if he was just young and full of youthful exuberance. The video was a bit strange. Sort of like, “Hi boys and girls. I’m an oceanographer!”

I don’t know what those folks are on. But it’s not just alcohol.

Just like this ice bound ship....

I suspect most of these so called scientists are playing a no-cost vacation scam. I doubt it’s just one guy getting a free ride. Some group of journalists needs to look into this before everyone stops trusting the scientific community.

Sack up, tourists.
What did arctic explorers do before there were helicopters? THEY WALKED. It's only 15 miles, you wussies

“There were no real scientists on the Minnow either.. “

There has to be a “professor” among the courageous 74 people on board. Maybe he can design a contraption that could get them out of the ice pack.

My bet is he found a few Ginger’s to keep him warm.
