During the month of January, Reformation Trust is giving away the eBook edition of R.C. Sprouls commentary on the Gospel of John.
In John, the second volume in the St. Andrews Expositional Commentary series, Dr. Sproul deals with major themes in his easily understandable style. This introduction to the Gospel of John is packed with insights and exhortations that will draw the reader closer to the Savior and encourage him or her to a greater depth of love and devotion to Him.
Since stepping into the pulpit of St. Andrews and committing himself to the weekly discipline of biblical exposition, this noted preacher has demonstrated a rare ability to explicate and apply Gods Word. I wholeheartedly recommend the St. Andrews Expositional Commentary to all who long to know the truth better and experience it more deeply in a life-changing fashion.

Dr. Sproul’s commentaries are very Pastoral and are essentially a collection of his sermons on the various books of the bible. I find them very similar to the commentaries of James Boice. Easy to understand but you aren’t going to get any deep exegesis. Well worth reading.
Thank you and Happy New Year.
Thanks for the post. Happy New Year!
I second your comment. They are indeed pastoral and worth reading. And I miss Dr. Boice. I have learned much through his sermons and writings.
Roger that. My only criticism of his commentaries is that he didn't write more of them! An incredible teacher and Pastor.
Anyone know if Dr Boice’s sermans are still available for streaming online? Used to actually hear him in Philly! Radio in area now is very poor. Would love to study under Sproul, though. Audited a class at Wheaton with Merril C Tenney. What an experience!

Thanks - just downloaded it to our Kindle.
I have it and I loved reading it. This commentary and the rest of the series are meant to be read as a book and not as a study guide.
Not sure why you would say ...’you won’t get any deep exegesis’....with Sproul.
In my opinion, that is essentially what Sproul is about!
Discovered him & his wonderful teaching series 25 years ago......have also heard him in person at the Ligonier Conferences.
He delights my soul!
Thanks! Found some of Tenney’s papers, too.
I was talking about translational details which is what hard core exegetical commentaries, like the "Word Commentary series" focus on. I would put pure exegetical commentaries and pure pastoral commentaries on opposite ends of the spectrum. While Pastoral commentaries may address the original language nuances involved with a certain word here or there they don't generally get too bogged down in the etymological details of a passage. Neither is necessarily any "better" than the other, they are just two different approaches. I generally use commentaries that fall in the middle. However, a good author is a good author and I'll study them no matter where they fall in the spectrum.
R.C, you may never read this, but I salute you as a stalwart defender of God’s kingdom. Bob
