Beyonce has landed herself in trouble with NASA after deciding to sample an audio clip taken from the 1986 Challenger space shuttle disaster on her new track XO.
The song, which features on the singers eponymous new album, begins with a six-second clip taken from the accident, in which Steve Nesbitt NASAs public affairs officer at the time states, Flight controllers here are looking very carefully at the situation. Obviously a major malfunction. The Challenger exploded shortly after lift off on its 86 mission, killing all seven people on board.
The Hollywood Reporter states that representatives from NASA have now come out, declaring the choice of clip inappropriate in the extreme.
Former employee Keith Cowling continued: "The choice is little different than taking Walter Cronkite's words to viewers announcing the death of President Kennedy or 911 calls from the World Trade Center attack and using them for shock value in a pop tune." Cowling has called for the sample to be removed from the track. Read more at http://www.nme.com/news/beyonce/74645#GHVJqvVhgOVi2Q3d.99

Wonder what Michelle Obama will have to say about this?
Watching the #SuperBowl with family & friends. @beyonce was phenomenal! I am so proud of her! -mo

she was just trying to prove to the world that “See,I am really not some dumb,D-List Celebrity.I do have a heart and I do care for all of those Americans who died on the way to the moon. It’s almost like comparing it to when Sally Feilds made her classic,,”You Like Me, You Really Really Like Me” moment.
Beyoncé is NWO.
It may be tasteless. But no government should force her not to use a public domain clip....
Oh give me a break. I find it way more offensive that under Obama the NUMBER ONE priority of NASA is to make Muslims feel good about themselves.
I’ll support Beyonce’s freedom of speech and expression....just as I would with any consrvative who ruffles some feathers.
She is so tasteless; however, Valerie Jarrett will come to her rescue.
I suggest that she donate $1 million to the families to make things right. No, make that $2 million.
I know that I sound a little spiteful but I am damned tired of entertainers preaching to the little people about civility. If I weren’t so angry, I’d say let it pass. But not any more.
tasteless, made to offend, but not illegal.
omd has used nasa audio clips in their songs and no peep from them. of course, they were not tasteless or made to offend.
not surprised she’d do something crappy like this.
Agree. And I don’t even listen to her music or support her.
true
She has nothing to worry about. She can always play the race card.
I have never listened to a Beyonce recording and don’t plan to start. But unless her use of the clip was meant to denigrate the event, I don’t see what the fuss is all about.
NASA is extremely PC, Beyonce is a Pal Of Obastard, so this will all go away quickly and painlessly.
Pretty sure it was. But, who cares what we think?
What is a beyonce?
She thumbed her nose at the cause that rules over her own constituency. Apparently, she forgot or didn’t know that a female public school teacher went down with that shuttle.
There is footage of the Challenger explosion on YouTube. Her parents expressions were so heartbreaking that it made me sob.
I cannot begin to imagine how painful it was for them to lose their daughter in such a tragic way especially since they were there and watched it happen.
