NBC New Year’s Eve Mocks Pearl Harbor Survivors As Only Able to Chew SpaghettiOs

On Pearl Harbor Day, Campbell’s got in a lot of trouble when it tweeted out a picture of its SpaghettiOs mascot holding an American flag and asking people to "take a moment to remember #PearlHarbor with us."

On NBC’s “New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly,” actress and comedienne Natasha Leggero disgustingly joked, “It sucks that the only survivors of Pearl Harbor are being mocked by the only food they can still chew” (video follows with transcript and commentary):

Likely guilty but perhaps eligible for a BJ Clinton post-POTUS pardon.

“Help me out here. I don’t have TV( and don’t want it) It sounds like Campbell’s was trying to do something patriotic, albeit in a clumsy, ignorant way. But I didnt see it. What about it was mocking or controversial? I don’t really care about Natasha Leggero, but am curious about the original spot.”

The original spot was quite innocuous, and made into a big issue for some reason. It was a spaghetti-o with an American flag with a little blurb about Pearl Harbor above, meant to commemorate the attack. People apparently thought it was making light of the tragedy with a cheery cartoony symbol. It might have been animated, and I heard something about twerking, but the still I saw of it was nothing bad at all.

On NBC’s “New Year’s Eve with Carson Daly,

Interestingly NBC was the network that carried ‘Victory at Sea’ when it first was screened in from October 1952 to May 1953. The Pearl Harbor segment is the second or third episode entitled ‘The Pacific Boils Over’. The film montage counting down to the morning of 7 December is still one that makes the hair prickle on the back of my neck. The understanding of the how consequential the Big War was is truly vanishing before our eyes.

‘Also they don’t learn a lot of history in the schools. I think that World War II may be especially shortchanged.’

The most emphasized element in many High school's coverage of WW2 is the internment of the Japanese population from the Pacific coast states coupled with the racist nature of the A Bomb drops on Japan, next is women in industry feminist propaganda and third is some garbled discussion of the Tuskegee Airmen and trailing at the end is some mention of D Day. Pearl Harbor, Midway, Salerno, Anzio, Ploesti Raid, St Lo, the Ardennes, the Marianas, Iwo, Okinawa, the Kamikaze campaign, Leyte, and a thousand other things have vanished down the memory hole along with anything else stirring about our history.

last person watching NBC turn off the tv

Made me laugh!

'Course it's likely the whole NBC viewing public is couch-ridden, cheeto-stained, stoned and immobile (the remote just out of reach on the table) by now.

I don’t care any more. The pensioners of every political stripe (all kinds, including former government contractor employees) in my community hate veterans in general except for a couple of men who claim to be prior service, “Wiccan” and proudly on drugs. No joke, and those two seem to be popular and well liked by the local pillars of the community. Disgusting. Good prior servicemen are gossiped about, falsely accused and driven out.

Do as I do, and stop telling people face to face that you’re prior service. Doing so only alerts backstabbers. Mind your own business, and get ready to see the economy go further toward a big bust. Watch the zombies from a distance, as they gobble each other up and lose all that they have.

Yes, every V-J day I take the opportunity to remind people that Hiroshima and Nagasaki, awful as they may have been, were the best option for ending the war. Not just for our side, but for the Japanese too. They were planning to fight to the last man, woman and child. People have no idea what that ground war, scheduled to start in March 1946, would have been like. Some men who had just gotten home would have shipped back out. I found this out reading the biography of Charles Schulz, creator of Peanuts. Schulz would have been one of them, having already served in Europe. So would have a lot of our fathers, grandfathers, uncles. End of rant. Check back in with me the first week of August.

The next time somebody brings up “the racist nature” of the war with Japan it might be a good time to mention the Bataan Death March and the Rape of Nanking. I think most people already know about the Japanese comfort women. The truth is the Japanese had had a mean reputation in Asia for centuries. The world is a tough place. I know this is off topic, but it’s one of my pet peeves.
