“The majority of the Chinese Islamic people are categorized as Hui”

“...there is a larger population of Muslims in China than in most Arab states, and Western China, bordering on Pakistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, and Kazakhstan, is known as “The Quran Belt” due to large number of Islamic communities found there.”

The “Quran Belt” is a new one to me.

The thing that always made me curious is why the Chinese Consulate is located in Japantown. Why not in Chinatown, or in Pacific Heights like many other consulates? Troublemakers, maybe, to make a point to Japanese interests here. The other thing is that the consulate borders a poor african-American district full of housing projects; perhaps a resident just doesn't like the Chinese presence.

That african-American district used to be full of Japanese-Americans until WWII forced Japanese into camps and blacks were brought in from the south into that housing. I remember watching the razing of buildings along Geary Blvd in the 60's as the Japanese built a buffer to separate themselves from the blacks. Starting to change now with Chinese and Koreans moving in while blacks move away.

The Fillmore was a long-time Japanese district until WWII changed everything. Blacks brought in from the south for labor to build ships, etc., needed housing… well a bunch of empty homes and apartments vacated by Japanese-Americans were available. Most Japanese-Americans returning from camps after WWII didn't like the new neighborhood mix and went elsewhere. The ones who returned to their former residences (taken care of by friendly whites) put up a barrier at Geary and Fillmore to separate themselves from the black ghetto, in the form of a Japanese mall and hotel complex; very effective. My dentist (who was a former internee at a camp) is one block from that Chinese consulate, so I pass by there often. Lots of demonstrations there by religious Chinese against the red Chinese government.

I bet you remember when it was all white in that area, especially Clement one block north. Now all Chinese, called the new Chinatown. It kills me when people complain about changing the "flavor" of a neighborhood, when that neighborhood has changed often. For instance, Mexican-Americans complaining about Chinese restaurants opening in the Mission District, as if it was always like Tijuana with a heavy latino mix. When I grew up in the Mission, it was Irish-Italian flavor. Things change all the time; so do neighborhoods. The Chinese are really changing things, and will probably replace the latinos in SF. I'll miss Japantown, as it is ever-shrinking; lots of theaters, shops and restaurants disappeared over 60 years.
