The consequences of Obamacare
The Orange County Register ^ | January 2, 2014 | Neel Kashkari

I've spent most of the year traveling across the state, meeting Californians and learning firsthand about the challenges they face.

Not surprisingly, one of the key messages I have heard repeatedly is that access to affordable healthcare is important.

The Californians I've met with often mention two fundamental flaws with President Barack Obama's healthcare law: 1) the negative effect of the Affordable Care Act on jobs and 2) skyrocketing premiums for healthy people.

I've talked to small business owners who were concerned they couldn't afford the Affordable Care Act. Some told me they would be forced to cut hours or reduce their full-time staff. I even heard from a pastor who lectured me about how Republicans are heartless for thwarting Obamacare, only later admitting that he had to make personnel changes because his church couldn't afford to comply. In his words: “I want my staff to have coverage but I want someone else to pay for it.” I didn't mind his lecture and I sympathized with his dilemma.

My own experience with Obamacare opened my eyes to the myriad of problems with the new law. Until January 2013, I had employer-provided health care. When I left my job in January, I was responsible for purchasing my own health insurance and went onto COBRA, a temporary but expensive option.

So when Obamacare went into effect on Oct. 1, 2013, I went to Covered California's website and tried to sign up. I entered all the information requested on the website. But then… nothing. No response. No email confirmation. Nothing. Was I signed up? I had no idea....

You wanted a tax!

You got a tax!

Tax on our health! Tax on our jobs!

Justice Roberts was crazy. Like a fox.

Sheesh! What a bunch of whiners. You wanted communism you got communism. Don't you understand, comrade, that YOU are the sacrificial lamb you've been waiting for?

But the first words out of my mouth are still, “0bama cares about the little guy and Republicans are evil child and woman killers”. Pastor or not, this is a real jerkball who’s probably ready, willing, and able to mindlessly repeat talking points about Republicans, to deny his own experience and to shut down what little common sense he might have. I really have genuine contempt for people who should know better.

How could such a man be qualified to preach and teach the truth on any subject?

I have a niece who last summer was arguing with me about Obamacare and how great it would be. This Christmas she was complaining how her deductibles rose to $10,000 per family. I told her that in essence she is paying about $16,000 a year before her insurance kicks in but she should be happy to know that someone else is getting "free" health care. Then I changed the subject.

Bravo. I am past the idea of arguing with the liberals. It is like trying to teach a pig to sing. But reality is a harsh teacher and far better than me. I think most of the low information voters were all for Obamacare because they thought they would get their insurance for free or at least, cheap. Oops.

I hope that your niece and others like here stay home on election day in 2014. I do not trust people like her to actually vote for the people who will actually repeal this monstrosity.

Isn’t it just great to try to have a rational discussion with folks who do not know what a deductible is? Who don’t know there are 3 branches of gov’t, or who cannot name the VP, but they know, they really really know, that this thing that has been incontrovertibly lied about 200 documentable times, will be so darned good and the insuarance cos are so darn evil (even though it is those very same ins cos who are the monopoly partners for this trainwreck, it’s just they were evil before but now 0bama has tamed them, he has taken greed out of their business equation) and only government can assure us of everything being fair. It’s so fair what Fed workers earn and the pensions and bennies they get that nobody else gets. So very, very fair.
