SEATTLE (AP) -- A contract offer to Boeing machinists that would concede some pension and health care benefits in order to secure assembly of the company's new 777X airplane in Washington state has fractured the union.
It has drawn unusual pleas from politicians who say the deal is necessary to support the Puget Sound region's economic future. Boeing has been exploring the prospect of building the 777X elsewhere, a move that could trigger a steady exodus of aerospace jobs from a region where Boeing was founded.
Local union officials, meanwhile, urged their 30,000 members to oppose the deal that members were voting on Friday, arguing that the proposal surrenders too much at a time of company profitability. They have opposed taking a vote at all but were overruled by national leaders in the Machinists union.
Voting was scheduled for 5 a.m. to 6 p.m. Results were expected to be announced later in the night.
A few hundred workers had lined up in front the union hall in Everett, located across from Boeing, to obtain ballots Friday morning. A steady stream of workers walked inside with light blue envelopes in hand.
Tina Shrader, a Boeing worker for eight years, said she was voting no.
"I don't want to mess with my pension. I'm here for my paycheck and for my pension," Shrader said.

And since the local bosses are counting the ballots, what do you want to bet the membership will see the light and reject the offer?
Boeing purchased McDonnell Douglas about a decade ago. Many of the old M-D production facilities are still owned by Boeing. If the machinist reject the offer, I look for Boeing to move 777X production out of Washington by January 1, 2015.
One suspects that you are entirely correct, my FRiend, unless the acceptance vote is so lopsided that the (Obama pals) union bosses can't get away with the big con (this time).
.
They’ll vote it down.
politicians: how will we be able to tax all of you more if you don’t keep working here?
Seems more like a fight to see who controls the pension fund. Does anyone know how it works.
Theyll vote it down.
then they will demand Obama Admin force Boeing to give in
The LB facility is a fraction of its former self (and sitting on a couple billion dollars worth of land). Nobody would consider moving this kind of work INTO California.
The unions are counting on their friends in the NLRB to prevent Boeing from moving their production to another state.
If the no vote wins she will have neither.
The NLRB will be told a second time to Go To HELL.
My view of this situation is, let the workers swallow the union poison pill, move the assembly plant to South Carolina and hire people that are happy when they are putting (the airplane that I would fly) the 777X, together. Seattle doesn’t deserve a company like Boeing, they should have Chrysler or GM!!
Many years ago, my mother was a member of the machinists union. She was injured on the job...an explosion damaged her hand seriously.....she was on disability for whatever time was allowed.....she came off disability months short of qualifying for her pension and was denied benefits forever....they can stick it up theis whatevers....I hope they all vote against reality and then FACE IT.
Time to play the Final Jeopardy song as the ballots are counted.

Long lines this time, gotta verify they are legal to vote.
I’m pretty sure illegals, the dead, and other dis-allowed individuals will be voting!
Does anyone know when the vote tally will be released? One story I read said “Later tonight”, but what does that mean? 1:00 am or 5:00am.
I wonder why:
