Katrina Victims Say Brad Pitt's Charity Homes Are Already Rotting By Heather Alexander, Houston Chronicle January 2, 2014

Actor Brad Pitt visits the Lower Ninth Ward of New Orleans during a trip to lobby government officials to increase the speed of re-construction on July 13, 2006 in New Orleans, Louisiana. Pitt and Global Green USA created a sustainable design architecture competition to showcase affordable, energy-efficient construction. The competition drew entries from around the world. Brad Pitt's charity home builders are replacing timber used on dozens of properties built in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina because the wood used on them is rotting.

To date, 100 have been built. Wood used for decking and steps is now rotting, according to a charity spokesperson.

"It was unable to withstand moisture, which is obviously a big problem in New Orleans," Taylor Royle told the New Orleans Advocate.

"This doesn't usually happen," Royle went on, "Most of the (new products) work, and they're great, and we're always testing new products to see if they can help make the homes more sustainable, more affordable or both."

The charity prides itself on making safe and sustainable houses, their website says they meet the highest level of certification offered by the Green Building Council.

Brad Pitt reportedly met President Barack Obama at the White House to promote green housing projects and his Make it Right program has been award winning.

I give Pitt a little credit for actually DOING something with the money; far too many ‘charities’ blow it all on salaries. They could have executed it better, but the good intent was there.

So you give someone a house and they can’t do basic maintenance after 10years?

I guess it wouldn’t occur to these people to fix and or replace things that are broken.

I remember us buying an old but very comfortable house back in the 60s. He had my Brothers and me going around coating it with coppersote.

I guess the idea was preventive maintenance as it showed no signs of rot.

Public housing always looks like crap ten years after people move into it. Heaven forbid people buy and then apply some Thompsons or DTS Water seal every spring.

I think that explains it.

They didn’t build it and expect someone else to take care of it.

Snapshot of the futility of liberalism. People simply don’t appreciate something they were given as opposed to something they achieved with their own labors. Also environmentalists must obey the laws of physics whatever their politics.

A friend of mine employed by a major university works in building maintenance. They are tearing down ‘green’ buildings built less than a decade ago due to deterioration. This story doesn't surprise me at all.

This recalls something I heard years ago:

People buying for themselves with their own money care about price and quality.

People buying for themselves with the money of others care about quality but not price.

People buying for others with their own money care about price but not quality.

People buying for others with the money of others care about neither quality nor price.

At least it felt good, and the termites received high-quality organic feed.

Typical of the whiners.
Pitt will realize the truth of Clint Eastwood's immortal words:

No good deed ever goes unpunished.

They used some form of wood composite decking. If I remember correctly it is having the same problem in other places. I no longer see this decking product when I go to the lumber yard.

This is not a Brad Pitt issue, this is the problem of the architect that drew up the specifications. Brad Pitt doesn’t have a clue on what is or is not a suitable product for a home in a moist area. He just helped raise money for the project. (An admirable thing to my mind.)

I liked the way that some of those houses looked. Some were goofy, but better looking than the long narrow houses they replaced. New Orleans is still a wreck. They should evaculate the lower parishes and flood them for a turning basin.

The absence of chemicals in the TimberSIL wood meant it could be “mulched and composted at the end of its life cycle,” ...

Apparently, this wonderful product reached the end of its life cycle ahead of schedule.
