The last listed address for the dogs owner is the Miami area.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - A St. Petersburg man is trying to track down the owner of a dog found treading water in Tampa Bay.

Early Thursday morning, a fishermen saw the dog, pulled it from the water and brought it to a marina at Demens Landing Park.

It's not clear how the dog got into the water, nor how long it had been there before it was rescued.

Anthony Basile was going to pay rent for his boat slip Thursday morning when he saw the fishermen putting the dog on the dock.

He took the dog, named Baby, to his boat and has been caring for her since.

"It's sad," Basile said. "The dog is lost."

This article says Baby was reported missing 2 years ago.

"....the dog was reported missing two years ago, and the number associated with her name doesn't work. A Banfield spokesperson said it's possible Baby's family reported her missing years ago, found her, and didn't update her information.

Baby is brown, about 18 inches tall and 20 to 30 pounds, Johnson said. She's wearing a red collar and a pink rhinestone name tag. They aren't sure about her breed but say she seems well groomed and cared for.

"She is just so well trained and obedient," Johnson said.

Now, her caretakers are hoping a happy reunion will follow the dog's lucky rescue. The veterinary hospital is trying to contact her owners, and in the meantime the staff hopes photos and word of the story will help her find her home."

I have a second contact listed with my dogs' chips - and I made sure that my rescued dog's chip was transferred from the rescue to my name.

While microchipping is a great idea, there seems to be a lack of public information about them TO THE OWNER. Professionals and law enforcement seem well versed on it but the owners are left in the dark.

From the level of care, the grooming, the collar and tag, it sounds as if this is not an abandoned or mistreated dog. Sounds to me as if she fell off a boat. There should be panicked people searching for her if that’s the case, though. Doesn’t sound as if there are. Elderly, doting owner, adult children who don’t share the affection? I have no idea, it’s a puzzle.

There should have been some urgency in finding the owners in that the pooch may have had a boat sink out from under her. Humans in 68 degree water will not survive for long. The Coast Guard should have been notified of the find.

EPIRB is your friend offshore.

that's my first thought.

tho it could be a new years party on a boat and the dog fell over board unnoticed

Story continued — happy ending.

Didn’t find original owner, but looks like some nice people adopted him.
