US icebreaker to rescue 2 ships in Antarctica

CANBERRA, Australia (AP) — A U.S. Coast Guard heavy icebreaker left Australia for Antarctica on Sunday to rescue more than 120 crew members aboard two icebreakers trapped in pack ice near the frozen continent's eastern edge, officials said.

The 122-meter (399-foot) cutter, the Polar Star, is responding to a Jan. 3 request from Australia, Russia and China to assist the Russian and Chinese ships because "there is sufficient concern that the vessels may not be able to free themselves from the ice," the Coast Guard said in a statement.

The Russian research ship Akademik Shokalskiy has been trapped in ice-clogged Commonwealth Bay since Christmas Eve, while the Chinese ship which came to its rescue, Xue Long or Snow Dragon in Chinese, reported on Friday it too had become stuck nearby.

Andrew Peacock, an Australian doctor and photographer who was rescued from the Russian ship, said he and his fellow passengers "have been and continue to be thankful for all the help we have been given and ... aware of the cost and inconvenience to others."

Right. A whole lot of evil petrochemicals are being burned (wasted) to rescue these fools. The bill for this would make them faint.

“....The Polar Star is just returning to service after a years-long, $90 million overhaul. It’s designed to get through a 6-foot-thick (2-meter-thick) layer of ice when it’s sailing at 3.5 mph — and when it’s in its backing-up-and-ramming mode, it’s capable of handling ice that’s up to 21 feet (6.5 meters) thick....”

Clarice Feldman at American Thinker: 2014: Let's Change the Climate "Watching both ObamaCare and the good ship Akademik Shokalskiy crash on the shoals of reality, I think it would take a heart of stone not to laugh at the misadventures of Australian climate scientist Chris Turney, who headed that misbegotten adventure in Antarctica, and Barack Obama, whose signature legislation is proving a rolling, unending debacle. Two luftmenschen brought down to earth with a crash.

Just as we are forced by federal law to give up incandescent bulbs for lesser alternatives to save carbon, fifty-two adventurers set off on a doomed expedition to prove a falsity: that the ice cap in the Antarctic is melting because of greenhouse gases.

[snip]

Climate modeling is not the only modeling that continues to prove out of whack with the real world: From estimates of use of emergency room facilities to the number of signups by healthier, younger citizens, every assumption of the ObamaCare authors and regulators seems to fail when tested against the real world. The administration keeps lying and obfuscating about the number and nature of the enrollments, but it is clear to any sentient, careful observer that this is a shipwreck for the president and his party. What remains is only for the ship to be smashed into even smaller pieces."

The Chinese are an expansionist power. They need resources. They see resources available in the polar regions.

Also, they have opened a northern shipping route in the artic.

So a Russian research ship hoping to find evidence of global warming gets stuck in summer ice. Subsequent attempts by Australia, China, Russia and New Zealand to affect a rescue were unsuccessful. Now the USCG is sending an icebreaker to rescue the rescuers. You can't make this stuff up.

BTW, I blame Bush and his global warming policies.

I don't mean to hijack the thread but that was a pretty funny video. A couple of questions:

Why didn't they go to the boat ramp?
Why would you put a boat out when Lake Huron was that rough?
How stupid was that guy in the GMC?

LOL when the tractors arrived to the French version of the Green Acres theme. Also when he opened the doors of the GMC to let Lake Huron drain out.

uh...isn’t rule number 1 of rescue operations to not become a victim yourself?

What is missing in the advertising of the specs for the USCGC POLAR STAR is that it is a maintenance hardship. She is in dry dock and year-long maintenance stints more than she is underway lately. We’ll see how she holds up.

Those stats of “handling” 6.5 meters of ice means that it takes a running start, runs atop the ice, the weight of the ship cracks it down, then ship applies astern propulsion to set up to take another 50 meter bite. That takes a very, very long time to go a few kilometers.

I’m with you guys, since 1971 and again tomorrow.

Just so you know. The Russians have the largest , most effective icebreakers, but most of them are in the Arctic.

One has to laugh at global warming mavins trapped in sea ice that apparently should not exist. No Obama sends in a US Coast Guard ship?

Buahahahahahahaha!

Why not just leave them there, global warming will met the ice very , very soon according to ALLEN GORP.

These people. re the Authorities telling industrialists the stuff they can’t be permitted to do. They weild enormous power over others and condescendingly talk about how they are trying to use their high-powered brains to rescue us from ourselves.

Yet THEY require elaborate rescue —a perfect nutshell.

Rescuing global warming scientists who get stuck in the ice is like rescuing Euell Gibbons if he was lost in the woods and starving!

Hey.
They fubarred, they should be ready to tough it out!

Kind of a global warming - Darwinian thing going on here.

Polar Star and her identical sister ship were built in 1976. The US does not have much in the way of big ocean going ice breakers.
