CHICAGO (AP) -- It's an assertion that has been accepted as fact by droves of the unemployed: Older people remaining on the job later in life are stealing jobs from young people.
One problem, many economists say: It isn't supported by a wisp of fact.

If this is the logic they are using then congress is stealing
their positions from younger people since they never seem to retire and in some cases are there when they are in their late 80’s or even longer. Strom Thurmond was 100 years old and he dies while still in office I believe.

Then they want to raise the retirement age for people, but don’t want them to work. Doesn’t make sense. Sounds like a liberal.
That's a poor analogy. The US is probably overproducing liberal arts PhDs and lawyers. And underproducing engineers and doctors.
At a recent industry meeting I sat next to an 84 year old doctor who was still doing some consulting work. If he retired completely, could a young doctor take his place? Not a chance, his expertise would just be lost.
The question that should be asked is, "Why is has unemployment remained so high during this economic recovery?"
It would also be spot on.
Let's say you own a couple of fast-food franchises in town, Wendy's, McDonald's whatever.
Now that you are hiring exclusively part-timers to avoid the ACA, which would you rather have? A polite woman in her late 50s who may not be really fast, but shows up for work consistently, knows how to make change, and gets customer orders right? Or your typical college drop-out with a nose jewel and attitude who might work a little faster IF she or he wasn't out too late the night before getting drunk, stoned or laid? Not a tough decision.
I can show you the fast food places in my town where you get great service because they hire the former kind. And those which give poor to mediocre service because they hire the later kind.
Lots of countries introduce “new” currencies to lop zeroes off the old, highly inflated currency. The US needs to do that — lop one or maybe even two decimal points off everything. Then cars would be $3,000 again, houses $30,000, a box of corn flakes $0.50, a candy bar a nickel, a newspaper a dime, etc.
Now if we could only hold onto our “old currency” salaries and switch to the “new dollar,” we’d be in heaven.
A person doesn’t “steal” a job. One beats out the competition with better skills and a better work ethic.
"Stealing" jobs from young people? Let us not loose track here, Obama has been "stealing" jobs from young people by imposing the largest tax hike in history, i.e. Obamacare.
For an older person to be working is now "stealing"?
That would be the absent Obama "economic recovery" jobs.
The minimum wage and low skill jobs aren't there because of some poorly negotiated free trade agreements made during the 1990s. (The minimum wage in India is about $689 per year!) Since we can't compete with places like India for low cost labor, that means that we need to compete by being able to do things that they can't do. And the problem with that is rooted in the dismal performance of the US public school system, and the resulting lack of basic skills and knowledge of many graduates. The majority of Americans have been poorly served by their government's policies on a number of different levels.
If they are petroleum engineering graduates, they are getting $100k fresh out of college.

Too many students are not learning anything and the garbage they are learning is useless to be a teacher. I’m sick of seeing so many morons think that their degree in Hippie History and real life experience in herpes acquisition somehow entitles them to a million dollar salary.
I don’t agree with the wording or their intent only that older workers have found it financially difficult to retire and leave those positions to the next generation. And yes I agree it flows from der leaderstinker.
More time spent learning less, for sure. Mandatory public education in Japan ends at age 14. Of course, their junior high kids have an education equivalent to or better than most of our high school kids by then.
They have a week in fall, another in spring where the kids go to work for local businesses. It is part of the assigned education. Most of them will continue on to high school, but even those who don't get a decent idea of what entry level work is like.
My daughter who went to Japanese public junior high found the experience highly useful. Most of the kids want to go to famous name companies (McDonald's, as I recall, was a top choice but too cheap to even give their free labor a free meal), so random drawing is used to decide who gets what is left. My daughter was fortunate to get a small family-owned steak house as one of the leftovers. They treated her very well and when the whole family showed up a week or two later as a "thank you", they gave us a huge discount on the meal.

Stealing?! ROFL!!! Ok. It's not as if these Gen X'ers actually want to work! No, they think they have a "right" to a job, to not actually WORK at that job, and to collect a paycheck for NOT working at a "job" they think we're STEALING from them.

Yes, difficult to retire also because of the uncertainty wrought by Obama.

H-1Bs were designed so there would be few older American tech workers; many of the young ones from decades ago were replaced by H-1Bs. While certainly hurting young American tech workers, it also hurt the older ones.
“The biggest problem with a lot of the younger workers is the lack of any kind of work ethic. They are, after all, ENTITLED to a high salary with full benefits. Uncle bammy told them so. Employers don’t need that kind of BS.”
Young people expected the same opportunities previous generations had, and aren’t getting them; nobody has been more impacted by the mass immigration than today’s young people. They do lack the same work ethic (in general), but over all I think they got screwed (in the same way many older Americans did, but in larger numbers).
