N. Korea: Is Kim Jong-un's Aunt Dead?

Is Kim Jong-un's Aunt Dead?

North Korean leader Kim Jong-un's aunt and widow of executed eminence grise Jang Song-taek is believed to have died, possibly by her own hand.

A government source here on Sunday said Kim Kyong-hui, who has been out of the public eye either committed suicide or died from a heart attack.

The source said intelligence services here believe Kim is dead but have not been able to confirm this, though they are also trying to find out whether she went abroad for medical treatment.

Another government official said, "There are many rumors going around about Kim Kyong-hui, but we're not yet able to confirm any of them."

Kim Kyong-hui is former North Korean leader Kim Jong-il's only sister and the daughter of nation founder Kim Il-sung.

She was last seen at the 65th anniversary of North Korea on Sept. 9 of last year and with Kim Jong-un and his wife Ri Sol-ju at a musical performance on Sept. 10. Despite the execution of her powerful husband, her name was on a list of dignitaries planning the funeral for a high-ranking Workers Party official who died in mid-December, so intelligence services here believed she was alive and well.

But she did not show up for the second anniversary of the death of Kim Jong-il on Dec. 17, raising speculation that she was ill or forced into isolation.

Born in 1946, she is 68 this year and apparently suffered from alcoholism and depression due to her troubled marriage with Jang and the suicide of her daughter in 2006.

She went to Moscow in 2011 for medical treatment. A government official said, "It is clear that Kim Kyong-hui received medical treatment on her toe and there are rumors that she was also treated for heart problems or dementia." Other rumors said she received medical treatment in Singapore in 2012. englishnews@chosun.com / Jan. 06, 2014 09:30 KST

Who living in North Korea WOULDN’T be suffering from alcoholism and depression?

Most, they can't afford the booze.

I have a feeling it isn’t going to end well for Kim Jong Un. Something tells me he’s going to be taken out sooner rather than later, and it won’t be pretty.

I just have a feeling someone is going to make an example of this dictator. Fear can sometimes have the opposite effect that a dictator desires. When others think they might be next, they might take matters into their own hands. I would not want to be Kim Jong Un.

North Korea is fragile because of the extreme lack of grace in it.

There’s never grace under dictators...ever!

Kim Jong Un has made his bed. He has chosen to live by the sword, and to be consumed with pride.

Well, speaking of the Soviets, there is the story of Beria snuffing Stalin with a pillow over the face in 1953. Then Beria and two or three more Premiers went in rapid succession before Kruchev.

RE: “Died, possibly by her own hand.”

Yeah - they chopped it off and shoved it down her throat.

One might think that the wickedly fluid situation in NK would give Mr. Rodman and the former NBA players pause for reflection

While some Freepers are in a position to know nonpublic information, most of us can only speculate.

To avoid any misunderstandings, what follows is merely my personal guess, though it's based on years of watching North Korea. I have no inside information whatsoever on this, so if I'm right, it's simply putting two and two together.

My guess is that Dennis Rodman knows exactly what he is doing, has received extensive briefings, and is reporting back what he has seen and heard. And I suspect Rodman’s connection with Kim Jong-eun goes back much farther than is publicly known.

Kim Jong-eun’s fascination with basketball has been known for a very long time. I think our State Department and foreign intelligence services, as well as those of South Korea, have been considering potential ways to use that connection since it provided a way to exploit the interest of a member of the North Korean ruling family in an aspect of Western culture.

If they weren't doing that, they were stupid not to do so. This was an obvious exploit opportunity, particularly when Kim Jong-eun was not considered to be in the line of succession but had influence with his father and brothers.

Somebody with more time on their hands than I have might like to look into what happened a number of years ago when a star North Korean basketball player wanted to come to the United States to play basketball. Again, I do not think this is the first time our intelligence agencies have considered basketball diplomacy.

Your saying he is deep cover NOC? Very risky. If found out, they will feed him feet first into a wood chipper on the outskirts of Pyongyang. My own pet theory is that he is getting deeper and deeper to a honey trap each time he goes up there and is plied with North Korean prostitutes. If they were smart, the NSA would find a way to get into his Beijing room at the opportune time and “chip” his shoe or other accessories.

Immediate guess? Executed but cannot be reported as executed due to the blood line to Kim Jong il. They will have it come out later she died of a heart attack or suicide or some other such nonsense, traffic accident on the say to Sunan Airport, and what not. They always have a story for something; doesnt matter if its true or not. Poor “Black eyes”.

I think it’s like the “president elected in a year ending in zero rule”. It may no longer hold. Need to find some new commonality.
