Why NFL Players Don't Wear Sleeves Even In Dangerously Cold Games
Business Insider ^ | Jan. 5, 2014, 12:21 PM | Jay Yarow

Perhaps you've heard it's going to be cold during today's Green Bay Packers game against the San Francisco 49ers.

Perhaps you've also heard that "cold" is an understatement. Weather.com says it will feel like -17 degrees during the heart of the game.

In weather like that, the beer in the stands can freeze before it's consumed. In weather like that, your hands go numb, your chest tightens, and just breathing the air can cause a burning sensation. It's just not weather designed for human beings.

And, yet, they will play football in this weather, because the NFL doesn't cancel games that are too cold.

And crazier still, many of the people playing in today's game will be out there in short sleeves, thin spandex pants, a jock strap, some pads, a t-shirt, a helmet, socks, shoes, and nothing else.

Why do NFL players refuse to wear sleeves, even when it's dangerously cold out?

Former Ravens linebacker Brendon Ayanbadejo has a great story up at Fox about he dealt with the cold weather.

Here's his explanation of why players don't wear sleeves:

One of the game-day rules for the Bears and Ravens -- and I would imagine any mentally tough team -- is that there are no long sleeves allowed under your jersey. That reinforces a mentally tough state of mind and it also is used as an intimidator to the opposing team, like a gorilla pounding on his chest in jungle saying "look at me I don't need sleeves in the cold."

But, let's just say you're not an insane person. You're not scared to wear sleeves. What happens to you? You'll probably get crap from some teammates. But at least you won't freeze to death.

It’s tough to hold onto to a football with an arm lathered with vaseline.

An old trick is to spray WD-40 onto your Jersey.

We did it in High School and JC

Remember the flap over Joe Namath and the panty hose? The panty hose actually did help. Similar hose on the upper body would also help, though likely to get torn up pretty quick in the rough and tumble of a football game.

“That reinforces a mentally tough state of mind and it also is used as an intimidator to the opposing team, like a gorilla pounding on his chest in jungle saying “look at me I don’t need sleeves in the cold.”

And yet the NFL player’s association won’t allow blood testing for HGH, even the laughable NFL’s proposal for HGH testing. ‘Yeah, look at me, I don’t need HGH testing—I am gorilla-like and am in short sleeves.’ OK.

" Vince Lombardi would never have approved of that!!!"

Uhmmm ..... Sorry to be the mythbuster here, but below are photos from the 1967 Ice Bowl, the Packers, coached by Lombardi in the dark jerseys ..... and all of them (that I can see anyway) are wearing long sleeves. (Of course, the Cowgirls were too.)

Trivia addendum:

During this game four fans had heart attacks in the stands. Nearly two dozen were hospitalized and treated for exposure in minus-45 wind chill temperatures. One fan died.

I’m sure you go out in 20 below wind chills without protection, and your young kids, too, if you have any. Wouldn’t want them to be wimps and sissies, now would you.

I member when us younguns had to walk 10 miles to and 10 miles back from school every day, uphill both ways through 3 feet of snow in minus 20 degree temps and minus 50 degree wind chills with the wind always in our faces with no coats, hats, or shoes. We wasn’t no sissies!

I agree with BI ...they should pass a law outlawing games in the cold. Also, people should be arrested for going outside without a coat and hat made at the Crony Clothing Company. Then they should pass a law making it illegal to do whatever you want to do as long as it doesn't hurt anybody else...

I believe Eddie Murphy put it best when he described his father saying they had to walk to school “with no feet”...

Fridge Perry. He is like twice the weight he was in 1985.

He is broke too. He was a great player.

Here is a story about a kid who bought the Fridge’s Super Bowl ring and gave it back to him.

I would imagine the range a field goal could be kicked would be reduce 10 or 15 yards, because the ball would feel like your kicking a cement brick.

Pantyhose are excellent at keeping your legs warm and are far more comfortable than thermals. I’ve worn them under my pajama pants when I’m cold.

I think the only problem for the men would be the tight panty squishing their manhood against their body.

"I think the 85 Bears started it."

Nope. Steelers offensive line started it in the 70's. The original intention was that it prevented defensive players from grabbing their sleeves and pulling them out of the way.

But yeah, it did have an intimidating characteristic.
