~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D. C.

Vanguard-SLV2

The United States Naval Research Laboratory is the corporate research laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps, and conducts a broad program of scientific research, technology and advanced development. NRL has served the Navy and the nation for over 85 years and continues to meet the complex technological challenges of today's world.

NRL was the first modern research institution created within the U.S. Navy. It began operations at 11:00 a.m. on July 2, 1923. The first step came in May 1915, a time when Americans were deeply worried about the great European war. Thomas Edison, when asked by a New York Times correspondent to comment on the conflict, argued that the Nation should look to science.

"The Government" he proposed in a published interview, "should maintain a great research laboratory... In this could be developed... all the technique of military and naval progression without any vast expense."

Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels seized the opportunity created by Edison's public comments to enlist Edison's support. He agreed to serve as the head of a new body of civilian experts - the Naval Consulting Board - to advise the Navy on science and technology.

NRL operates as the Navy's full-spectrum corporate laboratory, conducting a broadly based multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced technological development directed toward maritime applications of new and improved materials, techniques, equipment, systems and ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences and related technologies.

In 1992, the Secretary of the Navy consolidated existing Navy Research, Development, Test and Evaluation Engineering facilities and Fleet Support facilities to form a corporate community.

This community consists of a single corporate research laboratory (NRL) aligned with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and four warfare-oriented centers aligned by mission with the Systems Commands.

The four centers are the Naval Air Warfare Center, the Naval Command Control and Ocean Surveillance Center, the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center.

As part of the consolidation, the Naval Oceanographic and Atmospheric Research Laboratory, with locations in Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, and Monterey, California, merged with NRL to become what is today, the Navy's corporate laboratory.

NRL, the Navy's single, integrated Corporate Laboratory, provides the Navy with a broad foundation of in-house expertise from scientific through advanced development activity.

Good evening, KAthy!

*HUGS*

Morning commute - low 40's - rain. About an hour.

This evening. Clear skies, 20's - high winds. About an hour.

We're at about 15°F now - set to go down to about 5° or so. This is the coldest weather we've had in 20 years. Winter of '93-'94 we were at 0°F.

I recall the winter of 1970-71 when I was still in the Navy. We were below 0°F at NNMC Bethesda one night when I had the Chief-of-the-Day Watch. We marched out for Evening Colors and Old Glory was wrapped frozen around the flagpole. We had the Fire Department out to help but could not get the Flag down that night.

Good evening, Kathy...((HUGS))...back on Maddi patrol on Mon and Fri. Have med appointments.

She has fun with her bike giving them rides in front.

She has a new toy, a stove by FisherPrice that makes cooking noises (frying or boiling water) and even an oven with a timer/bell. She's been cooking and feeding us all day.

WOW!! Having the flag frozen to the pole is quite an event, not to be forgotten.

Be very, very careful as you sally forth in the morning. Hope the van doors are working. Footing is an issue!!

Good road trip: NRL, - first job after college. Spent 3 years there in the mid 60s in the Radio Navigation Branch - 5440 if my memory serves me. One of our studies took us on the USNS Mizar out of Bayonne, New Jersy to north of Bermuda. I got sea sick before we got past the Verrazano Narrows Bridge but was recovered by midweek when the ship lost power during a storm and went broadside to the waves. It was a converted ice breaker and had a round bottom. It was not good. Fortunately, they somehow regained power & we rode out the rest of the storm in a more satisfactory manner. I think all the non-crew had retreated to our bunks. My boss, who had been ok earlier got sea sick from this ride. I did not. I concluded that the earlier experience must have inoculated me against this ailment.

As I recall our per diem was pretty low since we had government furnished housing and government furnished food.

Found the old spikes this morning! Ice should not be an issue in the morning, but if it is, I'm ready!

Signing off for the evening - sorry I don't have the customary Valediction this evening.

Good night, God Bless you and God Bless the United States of America!

Round Keel vessels suck on the surface, but that keeps them from getting ice bound and crushed.
