~The FReeper Canteen Presents~

Road Trip: U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Washington, D. C.

Vanguard-SLV2

The United States Naval Research Laboratory is the corporate research laboratory for the Navy and Marine Corps, and conducts a broad program of scientific research, technology and advanced development. NRL has served the Navy and the nation for over 85 years and continues to meet the complex technological challenges of today's world.

NRL was the first modern research institution created within the U.S. Navy. It began operations at 11:00 a.m. on July 2, 1923. The first step came in May 1915, a time when Americans were deeply worried about the great European war. Thomas Edison, when asked by a New York Times correspondent to comment on the conflict, argued that the Nation should look to science.

"The Government" he proposed in a published interview, "should maintain a great research laboratory... In this could be developed... all the technique of military and naval progression without any vast expense."

Secretary of the Navy Josephus Daniels seized the opportunity created by Edison's public comments to enlist Edison's support. He agreed to serve as the head of a new body of civilian experts - the Naval Consulting Board - to advise the Navy on science and technology.

NRL operates as the Navy's full-spectrum corporate laboratory, conducting a broadly based multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced technological development directed toward maritime applications of new and improved materials, techniques, equipment, systems and ocean, atmospheric, and space sciences and related technologies.

In 1992, the Secretary of the Navy consolidated existing Navy Research, Development, Test and Evaluation Engineering facilities and Fleet Support facilities to form a corporate community.

This community consists of a single corporate research laboratory (NRL) aligned with the Office of Naval Research (ONR) and four warfare-oriented centers aligned by mission with the Systems Commands.

The four centers are the Naval Air Warfare Center, the Naval Command Control and Ocean Surveillance Center, the Naval Surface Warfare Center, and the Naval Undersea Warfare Center.

As part of the consolidation, the Naval Oceanographic and Atmospheric Research Laboratory, with locations in Stennis Space Center, Mississippi, and Monterey, California, merged with NRL to become what is today, the Navy's corporate laboratory.

NRL, the Navy's single, integrated Corporate Laboratory, provides the Navy with a broad foundation of in-house expertise from scientific through advanced development activity.

The memorial is maintained by the U.S. National Park Service, and receives around 3 million visitors each year. The Memorial Wall was designed by U.S. landscape architect Maya Lin. The typesetting was performed by Datalantic in Atlanta, Georgia.

Good morning Western Phil

Thanks for sharing. Sounds like it was an adventure.

NRL still brings in students - some while finishing the senior year in HS, some that are in college - to work and learn.

Of course, there is no longer a Radio Navigation Branch or 5400 branch, but your story is a part of that history.

Going OK here. McAfee is downloading updates on my Windows 7 as I type this message.

It's 23 degrees currently here in Comanche OK. They say we may get to 47 for a high today. We'll see.

Morning Beachie!

I took an extra day off, so late with my hellos.

Had a great time at my Sister's, lots of food and cards and of course football. The Seahawks play Saturday, I'm rooting them on!

Need to fill up the morning cup and run..

Have a grand day!

Another NRL related memory comes to mind: One afternoon (must have been April 1, 1966) I had gone to the dispensary to get some required shots for an expedition on NRL’s EC 121 ( http://www.flickr.com/photos/sdasmarchives/4836024154/in/set-72157624597444010 ) to the far east. While I was there, I overheard action in the adjacent room. An electronic technician friend, Norm, was being prepped to be part of the search (on a Navy ship) for the for the H bomb resting in the Mediterranean ( http://www.history.com/this-day-in-history/h-bomb-lost-in-spain ). He had earlier been involved with a mid Atlantic search for a lost nuclear submarine. NRL had a policy of only giving shots when there was a medical doctor on the premises.

They were questioning Norm about his shot history – had he ever had any reaction to any kind of shot?

The answer was that once when he was in the Air Force he had a slight reaction to a tetanus shot. “In that case, we will give you half a dose today and the other half in a few days.” Apparently this was done & immediately there was a jolt of excitement. His blood pressure had gone to zero and the medic gave him a shot of adrenalin in the heart. Quickly they hauled him off to the hospital. During this activity, I stayed in my room, but after they left, I discussed the issue with the medical people and let them know that I was acquainted with Norm & his family After I returned to my office, I received a call from the Admin people. They wanted me to make the call to the family. I did that, but afterward wondered if his wife might have thought it was an April Fool’s thing. That was not the case.

Norm was conscious during the whole process and later described the adrenalin shot as quite painful. The physical location of NRL is pretty much on the south tip of the District of Columbia. The ambulance left in a hurry before it was determined that the young Navy personnel driving the ambulance did not know where the hospital was and had to be directed by the patient. He was released in a day or so, but did not make the trip to the Mediterranean.

Good morning Pro ((HUGS))

Glad you had a great time with family.

Ah, Seahawks. Who are they playing?

I’m still busy catching up at work. But it was a nice relaxing time off...mostly.

Have a terrifically terrific Tuesday.
