Computers and internet not only made modern trade and outsourcing possible but it also made automation like at grocery stores possible. Companies here can email their components in China and its very easy for Chinese to learn to read and write English.

In fact the computer itself killed millions of jobs replacing paper forms hand filled out.

I am skeptical that a Trump like protectionism would have worked.,

Obama scammed many of the public that government spending on green energy would create jobs that couldn't be exported,
Those jobs left here too and they took the bailed out GM jobs with them .
