Macy's laying off 2,500

The axe is falling at Macy's.

The department store operator said Wednesday that it was laying off 2,500 workers and closing five stores. The company is also consolidating its regional management and restructuring its retail and merchandise planning staff.

"[W]e have identified some specific areas where we can improve our efficiency without compromising our effectiveness in serving the evolving needs of our customers," Macy's CEO Terry Lundgren said in a statement.

Penny’s fired the guy who was pushing the gay agenda, and has tried to turn the chain back around. They seem to be making some progress, but the jury is still out on whether the current management can save the chain.

*****

When I go into a Penney’s, for one, it’s swarming with illegals pushing strollers with 4 kids hanging off of them, (and definitely not gays) OR, the illegals are working at the cash registers. The store of my youth is just not the store my youth anymore.

Then the merchandise is so unbelievably tacky and poorly made, I’d rather throw my money into the garbage than buy any of it.

Macy’s is probably re-arranging to stay afloat — but it won’t last long. Folks like us — the ones with any sort of income left, are remodeling, perhaps replacing an old car or two this year, and just generally still trying to hang onto the jobs we have for dear life. I have cut out so much that I’d like to have, but don’t really need ...and that’s what Macy’s offers.

JC Penny, Macys, and other department stores were where the Middle-class shopped. The Middle-class is being killed off in this country so course those stores are dying too.

Then the merchandise is so unbelievably tacky and poorly made....

Roger that. I've gotten a good number of coupons from JCP over the past six months, so I've gone there a couple of times looking for things - shoes, pants, etc. Hey, I like $10, or $25 -off coupons as much as the next guy. :-)

Anyhoo, I looked at their merch both times and said "Never mind". Two cracks at it is enough, I doubt that I'll be going back.

Macy's got my business, in both cases. Prices were actually the same or lower than JCP, and I thought that the quality was better.

We were told that a service economy would replace the industrial economy that was being off shored.

Looks like if people don’t have money, they won’t shop or consume services.

So what is next? Slave labor on the manor system like the days of old?

My mother was a big fan of B. Altman along with Best & Co. and Abraham and Strauss (A&S) and let’s not forget Gimbels and Ohrbachs.

In Northern VA at the Fair Oaks Mall, there are two Macy’s in the same MALL! of course, Macy’s bought up everyone and their brother and originally the stores were a Hechts and a Woodward/Lothrop, which is how it happened. But it does seem that one of those two could go!

A big problem for these retailers is that the disposable incomes are leaving the dying, older cities and heading to growing cities in the South.

New Macy's stores opening in:

-- University Town Center, Sarasota, FL (160,000 square feet; to open in fall 2014; approximately 175 associates);

-- Shops at Summerlin, Las Vegas, NV (180,000 square feet; to open in fall 2014; approximately 160 associates);

-- Mall at Bay Plaza, The Bronx, NY (160,000 square feet; to open in fall 2014; approximately 225 associates);

-- Plaza Del Caribe, Ponce, PR (150,000 square feet; to open in fall 2015; approximately 275 associates);

-- Mall at Miami Worldcenter, Miami, FL (195,000 square feet; to open in fall 2016; approximately 150 associates).

Big department stores are normally the anchor for a mall.
When the anchor dies, the mall dies.

More obamanomics.

Macy's was on the front line years ago selling Chinese merchandise with designer name tags. The prices were as high as designer label merchandise that wasn't manufactured in third-world cesspools.

They didn't even bother with the pretense that their stuff was made in China to lower prices. They're not alone. The most appalling example is crazy-expensive sneakers and shoes made in China, which almost can't be avoided. These companies deserve to go under and hopefully be replaced by responsible local merchants who give consumers a reason to shop locally. JMHO

Its not just that. It is the fact that people like me did not visit ANY brick & and mortar stores prior to Christmas this past year. Why go to the mall at all when I can buy anything I want from the computer on my desk. The market share for all of these stores is being lost to Internet retailers.
I bought from LLBean, Campmore, Amazon, etc. The only physical building I entered to buy a Christmas gift was CVS for stocking stuffers and Walmart because I also needed a few groceries and I wanted to buy a CD for my son two days before Christmas. If I had planned ahead I would have ordered the CD from Amazon online.
