An Orange County jury has begun deliberating the fates of two former Fullerton police officers accused of killing a schizophrenic homeless man during a violent encounter at a city bus depot in 2011.

Manuel Ramos and Jay Cicinelli are charged with striking Kelly Thomas with a baton and a stun gun in a beating that left the homeless man comatose. He died five days after the altercation.

The case went to the jury following Orange County Dist. Atty. Tony Rackauckas' rebuttal after three days of closing arguments... Rackauckas told jurors that the former officers had abused their authority on the July evening when they confronted Thomas.

Ramos is facing second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter charges, while Cicinelli is charged with involuntary manslaughter and excessive use of force...

This case took 2 1/2 years to go to trial, and the city of Fullerton fought it every step of the way.

Standby for the verdict. I predict it will be a quick deliberation.
Guilty on all counts.

I hope you are correct. These jackboots should be put behind bars for a long time.

I watched a long video, and from what that showed, it should be a no brainer.

Instead of restraining him, cuffing him, putting him a squad car, they played with him and toyed with him, taunting him.

These cops need to be an example.

I believe maximum sentence for Ramos is 15 years, but only 4 for Cincinelli. That’s not enough, considering he was heard saying: “I smashed his face to hell, “ with the butt end of his taser.

Agreed. I’ve read this area is very pro law enforcement, but that shouldn’t effect such a clear case of manslaughter. Why Cincinelli wasn’t charged with manslaughter too, is beyond me.

I went to college in Fullerton. My wife is friends with a former girlfriend of Thomas’ father.

The DA generally is a good guy, and these cops went way, way too far. Kelly Thomas was known to be mentally ill, sometimes living homeless, but never violent.

Is that what I heard some on FR affectionately refer to as a “Maglite Migraine?”

It is time to tell these a$$holes, our freedom and safety is not at the price they want to extract.

Ive heard the DA is nicknamed T-Rack.
What I’ve read is mostly negative about him, but it seems like he did a fairly good job prosecuting this case. That defense lawyer is an absolute low life.

What’s taking so long — this should be a no-brainer.

“Affectionately”?
I suppose some of them might think that’s appropriate dispensation of justice. Those cops, the chief, and the Mayor sure didn’t think they did anything wrong. That’s what I find so troubling about this whole affair.

I’m thinking they’ll have a verdict before the end of tomorrow.
If these jurors have any common sense.

What I’m amazed by, is that it took 2 1/2 years to bring this to trial.
