Daily pot tied to age of first psychotic episode

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - In a study of adults who experienced psychosis for the first time, having smoked marijuana daily was linked to an earlier age of onset of the disorder, according to UK researchers. "This is not a study about the association between cannabis and psychosis, but about the association between specific patterns of cannabis use . . . and an earlier onset of psychotic disorders," Dr. Marta Di Forti, who led the research at the Institute of Psychiatry at Kings College, said in an email. Among more than 400 people in South London admitted to hospitals with a diagnosed psychotic episode, the study team found the heaviest smokers of high-potency cannabis averaged about six years younger than patients who had not been smoking pot. Psychosis is a general term for a loss of reality, and is associated with several psychiatric diseases, including schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.

A year ago Fox News hosted pro legalization Pot types. One anti pot legalization rep was a lawyer. He simply stated that states that legalize pot, his law firm will wait five years and sue the pot growers/sellers for damage in the same manner the tobacco industry was sued and fined. Give it time when a family of a pot smoker whose brains are fried by the legal pot will sue for damage.

The data at the link suggests that by the time on is 35, most have given up on pot (3.4% of the population using), while the same age group is binge drinking (18.9%) at about 6 times the percentage of the pot users.

With scarce resources, which group should we be focusing on?

So the study asked particpants about weed, booze and other drug use, but the linked article correlated only to the use of pot.

That probably found more long term chronic heavy pot users to report on than long term chronic heavy alcohol users, because the pot users were still alive.

Thank you for your service. But your experience of being attacked by the furniture may have just been the furniture having a good laugh on you. They do that sometimes...What? Yeah, it’s a .30 caliber with a folding stock. No, I don’t hate my mother. Why?

I am impressed you can read a clock. Better be careful though, clocks report facts, not ignorant opinions.

Those that have something to lose won't admit to most people that they smoke. Of course losers will be the most public about it.

I grew up poor and now rub shoulders with some of the wealthiest people in the Northeast due to my profession. Some were born into it but about half earned their wealth.

Without a doubt the greatest consumers of pot are the very rich. Go into a Manhattan boutique building on a weekend night and you'll smell at least one smoker on almost every floor. There are pot delivery guys all over the city and they know the doormen very well.

Poor people can't afford that much and middle class tax slaves have zero time to consume it.

Inhaling tobacco smoke into your lungs and then exhaling has been deemed by the experts to be pure evil.

Inhaling marijuana smoke into your lungs and then holding it there has been deemed by the experts as `whatever’.

So what gives? Smoke is smoke and is always a threat to the pulmonary system. Ask any fireman.

Very well put. I know a lot of people at MIT that partake. Often.

“Do cigs cause psychotic episodes?”

Schizophrenics and other mentally ill are several times more likely to be tobacco smokers than the general population.

So by using the same logic as this study, yes, tobacco is “tied” to mental illness and “may” cause it.

It can’t be the fact that the mentally ill are far more likely to engage in risky behaviors and seek altered moods. The dang plants did it!
